Carp. If you want to cook him do it on a cedar board, with lots of seasoning, lemon juice, salt and pepper. When it is done throw the damned carp away and eat the board.

I have heard the same recipe for trout.

The one your buddy owns that takes you fishing with him.

What is recommended as a rig, as a basic reel and rod rig for lake or river fishing? I am an ultra novice. Preferably a suggestion a bit more advanced than cane pole and bobber. 😄

Go to a place that sells gear and feel some of them in your hand and move like your casting. Careful don't hit anyone ask a salesperson or someone who is also looking get what you feel comfortable with.

Youtube is wonderful resource for that now a days, Richard Gene the fishing machine, Realistic fishing, Chris Souders, 1 rod 1 reel fishing, hundreds of others at all skill levels and all types of angling.

But there is no substitute for just getting out and doing it, putting your time in and paying your dues.

Videos can help but the fish don't watch them so you keep trying until you find what they want. You work on your skills until you can drop a cast under a gnat's behind in a 30 mph wind and learn to read the water and weather better than a book. And you will never be done, every time out there is something to learn if you pay attention.

Caught some nice catfish at the lake of the zarks on spoons.

Sitting on the lake after dark the big ones come up splash down on a school of shad, then go to the bottom and wait for the shad to sink.
Just cast a spoon in the direction of the splash the results might be suprising. Light weight set up large line capacity.
