That is good to know, I'm from across the boarder in Caledonia, MN. I have fished the Miss. River but not much lately. I spend most of my time fly fishing trout. We have spent the last 40 years fishing up in Lac Suel up by Sioux Lookout, Ont. in the Spring but this year we are going to Devils Lake in ND. Have you ever fished Devils Lake. I have never fished it and I'm trying to get some info. This forum must reach out Nation wide but I think it is fairly new. Has anyone out there fished Devils Lake ND?

If you can brave the cold there’s good fishing there.

Well, I have just started really, so I have basically only gotten past the phase of deciding on what I want to build. There is nothing to show here at the moment as I am totally in the early phases, but once there is something worth taking a picture of, I will make sure to show you guys and probably gonna write a bit more about the process itself. I just wanted to seek some guys who have maybe done a similar thing or are also interested in picking up such project as their extra activity - having somebody knowledgeable or at least also interested to get in touch with would surely help with many details and make it all much more fun. If there is someone like this here, please either let me know here or through a PM, so we can get to know each other more.

Talk to Gibbs on NCIS, he has been building one for many years. I wouldn't build it in my basement though, unless you have a big patio door in order to get it out. Keep us posted and GOOD LUCK!!!!

When you say "spot" do you mean specs, aka speckled trout? If so, live shrimp or gulp under a popping cork works well. Give the cork a few pops once in a while, like every minute. The popping attracts the trout.

After work trip with my buddy. We caught 10+ fish averaging between 27-32". Brought home two that met the slot (22" and 23") as well as a flounder. Perfect Friday afternoon.

Thank you very much, I will give it a try when the weather warms up. I live in the "driftless" area, S.E. MN., Western WS. & N.W. IA. We have great trout fishing here and most of them are natural browns. A few natural brookies but they are getting to be fewer and fewer of them. Fifteen years ago, I had a stream that you could go up and catch 50 of them in a short afternoon. A guy bought it and "cleaned" the shore line up, no more brookies. Where they went, I have no idea.

Some years, but not lately, the DNR would dump a pail full of rainbows at different places next to the road after the "catch & kill" season is over. Most of them would be gone as soon as the "catch & kill" season starts the next year. The rainbows are more aggressive than than the browns and they will drive the browns out if they are too many of them. The largest brown caught in the area was a 141/2 #'er caught by "Black Bill" who taught me how to fly fish about 70 years ago. He caught it on "chub bait", cut bait from a chub. Not a fly.

Tight Lines!

22 black fly on big brown trout...
Hooks right on the edge of jaw and they don't shake it off...

The smallest fly that I have used and tied is a size 22 trico, it is black, and it works very well on brookies but use it only during a hatch. The hatch will occur when the air temp is above 75 degrees in the early afternoon close to overhanging willows. Tight Lines!

Talk to the locals on the pier and also the surf fishermen. They should be more than willing to help you out. If you have a good tackle shop around, they should be able to help but be careful, so they don't take advantage of you. Some of them like to do that. Good luck & Tight Lines.

I have been fly fishing most of my 75 years and what I would suggest is that you check with some of the local fly fishermen/women in the area to see if they have an extra rod that they don't use or know of someone who does. Perhaps, a fly fisherman has died and the widow would like to get rid of some of her husband's fly gear. You may be able to buy the whole ball of wax for a very reasonable price. The locals may know of a fly fisherman who is no longer able to fly fish and would love to help someone else get started in the wonderful sport. He may just give you his gear as well as some much needed advice in order to get you started. If worst comes to worse, check with e-bay or craig's list to see what they may have for sale. You will not need any more than a 5# rod for most bass fishing or trout fishing, and a reel does nothing more than store your line when you not using it. Keep me posted, maybe I can help you out. I live in S.E. MN., in the driftless area, one of the best trout fishing areas in the U.S. Glad to have you with us.

In reference to the "mystery fish", five years ago I was fishing off of the Gulf Shores Fishing Pier, one of the best in the lower 48 states, with live shrimp and I felt a hit. I set the hook and felt what seemed like a mattress, no head shake, very little fight, no long runs, but heavy. I had no idea of what it could be. As I brought the "fish" to the surface I could see that it was a big octopus, about 5' from the tips of it's tentacles. "Now what!" How do I get that puppy up this 28' pier. We had a 36" pier basket net that my buddy slipped under it and brought it up about 1/2 way only to have it crawl off, brake my 20# test bread and sink into the Gulf. So be it. I thought you would enjoy the story. I have gotten more mileage out of it than if I would have landed it.

Good for you, fishing is a mystery, that is the one of the many joys of it. Had you not had that light line, the mystery fish may not have hit your lure. (line shy) Keep trying buddy!

Is it worth bleeding a trout? I’ve read that it improves the meat quality. I’ve never done it before and I’m not picky like that, but does it make that much of a difference? I mean, it’s easy enough to do. Is it worth it?
