I've caught fish that were smaller than the lure, but never one that was smaller than the hook (almost).

So this year I wanted to try something new. Fly fishing. Little background. I live in central Ohio.

My target species this year are panfish (bluegill and crappie) some local river small mouth that rarely exceed 2lbs, and I want to top off the year with a trip to Michigan to try for some brown and rainbow trout. I went to the local-ish cabelas and ended up with an 8-6' 4wt.

Been practicing in the back yard and am building confidence and what I believe to be some skill in my accuracy. I'm slowly building my fly box as time is going on but recently I'm not as confident a 4wt is going to cut it.

So will this set up work for what I'm trying to accomplish this year or am I wasting time? Also if anyone has time to answer some questions about MI laws I have a few I would like to ask! Thanks everyone!

If you are fishing for stocked trout in Michigan the four weight will be perfect, even if you run into a 20 incher or so. if you are going to fish the lake run rainbows or browns, a four weight would be a problem, even for a flyfisher with a lot of experience. A five or six weight would still give you a lot of fun with panfish, and would handle a big trout if you have a lot of snag free water to play one. For the big lake run rainbows or browns a seven or eight weight is not too much rod. The are a lot of good, inexpensive outfits out there. if you are buying used equipment take an experienced flyfisher with you. Otherwise, Cabelas or a similar store has some good stuff to get you started. If you can palm a reel you won't need a drag, but it might be helpful.

If the front edges of the lower fins showed a little more white, it could also be an Arctic Char.

Don't think that is a Brown Trout. Wrong color & spot pattern. 37" lake Trout, maybe 17 lbs.
