[quote=Spiritof27]Bog O, isn't that against the law? Gouging? If it ain't it ought to be. Do you happen to know if there's some gov't agency that they can be reported to if they are? I'm gonna do a little research. I'll get back. Sorry for you troubles.[/quote

Unfortunately, there is no price gouging here. The time limit stated in the rental contract had expired, thus, no refund should be expected. An appeal to the owner(s) could be tried, but that may not receive a positive response. Apparently travel insurance was available but not taken out. A risk was taken there and resulted in this loss.

Long stiff rods just do not cast well! If you want to get good distance from the cast there should be good flexibility in the rod. I can outcast a stiff rod with a very flexible rod day in and day out. Have had both and junked the telephone pole rods.

I was told the longer the rod, the more hard it will be to cast lures. What size rod do you use from the surf?

Not necessarily true. You do want a ten foot rod, just make certain that it is not a telephone pole stiff one. Get a rod with a fast/soft action which will cast a good distance vs. a stiff rod. New surf casters tend to get a rod that is large and stiff. That is their first mistake. A flexible rod will outcast a stiff rod every time!

The Boga (stainless steel) model is the best one available. There are plastic ones out there, but what can I say, they are plastic.

In yalls experience what the best vintage spinning reel you could reasonably get off ebay. Something w/ a slow retrieve ratio. Cardinal? 308?

I still have my old Mitchell 300s, 302s, 400s, 406s.

Seriously? What do you do, put the dog food into a piece of nylon hose or something? Never heard of that before.

Seriously, they are pulling your leg this morning.

Where is the best place to catch Puppy Drum in Virginia and the best bait to use?

Back River in Hampton, Poquoson Flats in Poquoson, Rudie Inlet in Va Beach, Lynnhaven Inlet. Minnow under a bobber or artificial grub type lures, sometimes surface popper lures.

I switched to braid almost 20 years ago and so much better. Most times don't need to set the hook as the fish grabbing the bait or lure on a tightish line they self hook. People I've fished with who started to use braid had to change their action as being too aggressive can break the rod or rip the hook out of the fish.

A lot of people don’t take the time to learn how to fish with this kind of line, nor long enough to learn it’s benefits. Then they criticize the line. The soft touch of a fish bite Is felt much quicker than on mono and there is no stretch of the line leading to more hookups.

Braid and fluoro are on total opposite ends of the spectrum, so it's not something you can really "make the switch to". Those who use braid on everything are shooting themselves in the foot imo. Fluoro is great in clear water, it's very abrasion resistant, and it has good slack line sensitivity. It does stretch, but some heavier flipping lines are pretty stout. Also it's important you buy quality line, the negative is it's expensive. Cheap line will eventually ruin your day.

Braid however has zero stretch, and it's great for heavy grass, topwaters, and on spinning reels when using a leader. It shreds through grass, but has zero abrasion resistance, so rocks, wood, docks, or anything else that can fray line will chew braid up. It also has zero slack line sensitivity, so if it's a bit windy and you're dragging a football jig, for example, you'd feel nothing.

Use it the other way around; braid for your main line and fluoro for the leader.

I just picked up a Pflueger President Spinning Reel and rod combo at the local Sports Show and it seems to be a good reel to use for ultra-light casting. I didn't realize this when I bought it; I picked it up because I'm pretty new to fishing and haven't bought a new rod in 2 years and I don't own any "nice" rods or reels. Anyway, what sort of line do you recommend for a Spin Real and light rod set up for ultra light fishing? I'll be targeting trout this summer with this reel but it would be nice to be able to use it for some bluegill. Like I said I'm new and I'd like some advice on what line you'd use.

As light weight braid line that you can get away with. Add a light weight floro leader between the main line and the lure that you are casting.

I prefer Stren brand line as it stays round whereby most, if not all, other brands tend to flatten out under fishing pressure.

Wow! I have 36 rods with reels and an additional 4 reels. I just keep buying and buying. I no longer am able to fish offshore or even for a Cobia or large stripers. Those rods and reels are just taking up space in a closet.
