I'm a relatively new bass fisherman, still trying to figure these guys out. For the last week or so I've been noticing some new behavior at my local lake. In general the bite has turned off and I've seen hardly any activity at all from either bass or baitfish. But for a period of about 10-15 minutes each day I've gone fishing, the bass seem to be going nuts jumping out of the water. It'll happen in surges of about 30 seconds at a time, a few minutes apart, in a stretch of water about 75 yards wide, always in the same area of the lake. Seems like 10-15 bass all jumping out of the water at the same time. Now, I've seen bass hitting baitfish on the surface before, but this isn't what I'm used to seeing. Normally I'll see some signs of baitfish schooling around, and I normally see the bass hitting them one at a time. A splash here, a splash there. But not all at once like this. But this is just an eruption of fish with no warning, no signs of baitfish anywhere. I've seen Bluegill hanging out around 50+ yards from this area, but they seem pretty stationary lately. Haven't been seeing the schools of shad that I had been seeing all summer ever since the temps started dropping off. Mostly been in the 50's at night, and topping out around 75 during the day.

And as a side note, I've cast every damn type of lure I own into that frothing mess and not a single bite. Topwater, swim bait, dropshot, crankbait. Different presentations, different colors. Nothing is working for me.

Anyway, sorry for the wall of text. Anyone familiar with this behavior? Is this just a normal thing? Is it some kind of weird late year spawn? Is it a sign that there are baitfish there even if I'm not seeing the signs on the surface I'm used to? Are the bass just on drugs?

Any idea about what other kind of fish are in that lake? It sounds like they are being prayed upon from another type fish or perhaps otters. JMHO. Cheers!

Hello ,
I enjoy tying flies. Most of the flies I tie are for saltwater species, bass, and panfish. I live in the great city of New Orleans. I’ve recently started tying flies. I have a fly rod but, it’s a 6w 9foot trout rod so, I don’t do a lot of fishing with it. But for some reason I keep cranking out flies. I don’t know why but I enjoy. Is that strange?

P.s. I do lots of normal fishing for gamefish.

🤣 Same here, plus I also make all kinds of lures for fresh and salt water. I have so many there's no chance of ever using them in one lifetime. I believe it's called Compulsive Behavior Disorder. I can't for the life of me see the Disorder in it however! 😍 Cheers!

Anyone got anything good to say about Lamiglas? I've owned several but I never fish with em cause they're broke and I am pretty easy on my rods. I've broken a couple by stepping on them accidentally or catching the tip in the car door, but I'm pretty sure Lamiglas is the only brand I've broken while fishing.

Before Graphite and even Boron, Lamiglas was the state of the art in rod blanks. Still have a few. Never broke one, even when I should have😁. Yes, using them, or any rod as part of the pavement or as a door jam is fatal. Apparently they are still going strong too based on their website. Anyway, if you have broken rods (not stepped on or auto door customized), contact them. I'm sure they still stand behind their products.Cheers!👍

Anyone had any experience with these companies? I just started fly fishing and I’m looking to expand my fly inventory and learn new things. Wondering if anyone had any good/bad experiences with these subscription services? Any Advice? :)

You may want to check out www.FlyTyersDungeon.com. It 's a one man operation, so customer service and order fulfillment might be slower than what you expect, but the quality, quantity/ package, and prices makes up for any inconvenience. Been around a long time as well, so no fly-by-night operation. Just an FYI. Cheers!

In So. TX., Gulf area, I heard (?), that they stamp the big scallops that they sell in restaurants out of their "wings". I also heard that you are suppose to use a wire cutter to cut the penis off, "stinger" so they can't reproduce and put them back in the water. As far as I know you may keep them to eat if you want to. I have never seen anybody do it. They get very big and do put up a good fight and are fun to catch. It will be interesting to see what other people say about them.

The "grain" of the meat in Scallops is vertical. You'll know if you're getting Skate Wings instead because the grain if the meat in Skate Wings is horizontal. Cheers.

I just got my fishing license and would like to try to catch and eat a (legal) snook! Any tips from you SE Florida fisherman? No boat so it would have to be accessible by land.

I appreciate any advice. My GF and I are excited to catch some good fish!

Best bet is to fish the inlet on an outgoing tide after sunset and before sunrise (NO daylight at all) with a Tsumani Pro Holographic Swim Bait (curly tail) 4" SSST4-10 Purple Haze/Clear. That at least is my guaranteed Snook catcher. The key is to retrieve it as slow as possible so you are dragging the bottom. When you are sure you hit a snag, set the hook hard. Chances are good that "snag" will come to life with a Snook on your line. If it turns out to be a real snag, break off the lure and tie on another and repeat.
If you cannot find the above Tsunami model swim bait try to find as close a match as possible. Minimum lure weight should be 1/2 ounce. 5/8 oz. is better.
Again, the slow retrieve is key. If it's not dragging bottom, you're reeling too fast.
Once you get daylight, switch to live bait on a 3/0 Circle hook, again on the bottom. Shrimp and Pilchards are especially good. Patience and persistence wins.
Cheers!😎

Largemouths are not uncommon in brackish water areas. Shell Creek in Punta Gorda is an great example og this. You can catch Redfish, Snook, Tarpon, Jacks, Drum, Ladyfish, etc. salt water fish and Largemouths all from the same spot.

Check their stomach contents. Good bet they are full of plastic baits which they cannot digest shutting down their digestive system and starving them to death.
