just what i said. I can see a black mark where the side brace ran under the tube was attached.
I see that now, thanks. Have never had a reel/line on the pole. As a special gift I have always kept aside.
Closer look and I see it.

Pics are of an old pole gifted to me by great grandfather prior his passing. Handle was personally hand turned on lathe in his garage.
Interesting top eyelet. Assume if was for a hook.
That tip eye has been bent back towards the handle. The upper loop was soldered to the tubing. You can see the groove where it was originally soldered.

I believe Gordon is spot on. I still have 2 of these with those old Penn 09 reels. Don’t use them much anymore but caught many fish with them.
It is a saltwater boat rod! I had one of these when I was 8 years old. Given to me by my grandfather! It had a Pen 509 jig master real. Today that rod would be a light tackle salt water rod ! I used mine for fishing live bait for strippers in the San Francisco Bay ! It’s a great rod for that but I will tell you this keep for a remberance of your friend and hang it up I broke mine while fishing for light tackle rock fish the rod is over 80 years old. You have a collector’s piece!!! Don’t fish with it if you brake it you’ll never forgive yourself like me !
