I just put a split shot (size depending on how deep you want to go) above a swivel, and then attach the leader with the lure on it, about a 3-4 foot leader.

Thanks Don! How fast do you like to troll there?

I don’t have any mph guidelines as I am just in a little 8 foot dinghy with no fish finder. I troll just fast enough to make sure the blade is slowly spinning. Not very scientific, but it works.

Don, I am new to the area here. What kind of boats/motors can I use on cranberry lake? I have a bass boat with a 50hp two stroke injected. I know some lakes are no motors or just four strokes.

The only kind of motors allowed on the lake are electric motors, no internal combustion motors alllowed.
Most all of the boats (and there are very few) are small, never seen a bass boat on the lake.

Watch out for non gas motor lakes. In many of those lakes, if your motor is just hanging on the transom you may very well land a ticket. They don't seem to care if it's in the water. Just as long as its on the boat.

That is strictly enforced on Lake Padden. No gas motor on board is written into the Washington regulations. Just an FYI. I may be in my 70's, but I still find that float tubes are the way to go in those ponds/lakes if you are fishing alone or have a buddy that also tubes. If not, a simple Walmart sit on top kayak is cheap and very effective.

I've (out of frustration) been retrofitting an old sea kayak for just these situations. Originally coming from MN I was flabbergasted when I slowly realized after my boat purchase just how many lakes out here are closed to motor boats. Frankly, I don't want to use a electric motor to traverse a lake. Its OK for scooting around docks when fly-fishing for bass but an all day troll its beyond reasonable expectation. The battery just wont hold out. I am of the mind to be careful of my wake and its just a little boat so 8 MPH is not hard to work with. As far as I understand its all about the environment. We all should go to electric cars to save the planet until one day Saint Helens rips a bad one and were all back in the dark ages. I think its overkill and the fisherman get to pay so the bureaucrats can feel good. I'm not a young guy; rowing in a row boat is a bit much exertion. I think who ever made that law is the North end of a Southbound horse.

I have a Walker Bay 8ft dinghy, that I put on top of my vehicle. I use that boat in small lakes and large lakes. Some people have even seen me using it to crab off of Mukilteo or Kayak Point. Anyways, back to the point. I can and have trolled all day long, with an electric motor, on the same battery. If you can't troll all day long on the same battery, maybe you should buy a new battery or trolling motor, or maybe you are using a boat that is too large for your motor. I can use my same battery and trolling motor on my 12ft aluminum boat with the same results. Just saying.

No, It's a good battery and a light 12' aluminum boat. I think I've gone about 6 hours before a need to charge. And that electric motor is just for maneuvering. Concerning gas vs elec.; I think this should be the choice of the fisherman not the bureaucrat. Again, I would rather have a small gas motor to get across the lake. It is first of all faster. Can you bring your boat to 8 MPH with your elec motor? A small gas motor dose no harm to the environment. Unless you sink. But what's the difference if your boat sinks with a gallon of gas vs. a battery? It's all bad for the environment. Actually non of this should be said as it will give the official ideas to close all waters to all but oars. On the flip side, if anyone was to go out and just dump gas or throw their old batter in in the lake that person needs to be severally dealt with.

On the small lakes I go out on in Washington (cranberry, tarboo, sandy shore, etc), I am glad you can only use electric motors. It is a really peaceful environment without the sound or smell of gas motors. All of those lakes are very small, so there is no need to go at 8mph to get around. Larger lakes are obviously a different story.

Most lakes in King CO prohibit gas motors. Large and small. I'm glad you enjoy a small peaceful lake. But there should not be rules like this for all lakes. Perhaps only lakes under a certain size?

I agree, I didn’t know that many lakes in king county ( or elsewhere in the state) had that restriction.
