Not until last year. An 18 year old with another party, just learning to fish got one about 45 inches long.

Thanks for the pictures , nice ones. Could you tell me what the go to lure is ? Thanks. Trying to catch one or two at the Merrimack River in Lowell Massachusetts and also Haverhill .

My experience over the years fishing for pike is that they like shiny things with a lot of flash. As said in someone else's postpone will hit about anything bass will hit as well. Just keep trying different things til you find one that works on you chosen body of water.

Great pike and nice that they are careful to conserve the resource. In that vein could I humbly suggest that you discourage vertically suspending the bigger fish. Many studies have shown that damage is done when all that weight is pulling down on their neck structures. Horizontal holds are the safe way to go.

I’m not sure if you’ll believe me, but the team with the winning weight caught them all on a drop shot using a ZMan Trick Shotz in the twilight color. My partner canceled at the last minute and since it was a team tournament I couldn’t fish. One of the winners and I fished this tournament last year together and watched a guy slamming them on a drop shot. So I reminded my last years partner to use the drop shot. He and his brother did and they won the tournament Saturday on it.

Nice tip! I will try that starting next Sat. in NO!

Aurora Bassmaster’s set a three fish limit for the competitors. They did this as many competitors boats livewells are too small to insure the survival of 5 large pike. Catch and release helps insure the future of a healthy population of these great fighting fish.

I have news for them in terms of their delusions about catch and release and survival...people would be appalled at how many of these fish being held in live wells, weighed, and held up for pictures actually survive. Pike are notoriously sensitive to handling, and a large number of people who go after big Pike know it, being careful to try to keep them in the water, and handle them extremely carefully.

And the real proof is in the drastically reduced quality of the tournament catches...hammer a lake with tournaments and the quality and numbers of the fish is going to be affected.

Did you ever encounter muskies there?

Not in that part of Lake Simcoe. Muskies if caught in that lake or the adjoining lake (Couchiching) Must be released if caught. I’ve caught one there a little over 40 inches. A friend of mine with the Ontario MNR that recently passed away was in charge of reintroducing Muskies into those lakes, myself and several of our club members have helped releasing young muskies 4 to 6 inches in areas that provided plenty of cover for them.
