The Aurora Bassmaster’s held their annual Pike tournament on Lake Simcoe in Ontario. Compared to recent years fishing was pretty tough with 5 teams not boating a fish. The winning weight was also way down as it was only 23.15 lbs compared to 30 plus for the last 10 years. The big fish for the Tournament was a respectable 9.7lb bruiser.
Aurora Bassmaster’s set a three fish limit for the competitors. They did this as many competitors boats livewells are too small to insure the survival of 5 large pike. Catch and release helps insure the future of a healthy population of these great fighting fish.
Even with the tough fishing everyone said they enjoyed the day as fishing conditions were just about perfect. The pictures below will start with our 1st place finishers who were two brothers.

I get up to Ontario about every three years. Go to Oak Lake Lodge on the English River mostly, but have done several out post trips on other lakes over the years. Too old (or spoiled) to go outpost now.

Can’t beat fishing for walleye for shore lunch first thing and then switching to northern and smallmouth. Oak Lake is catch and release except for shore lunch and has many nice fish. The smallmouth population is growing as well; twenty years ago we would pick an occasional smallie but now there are plenty.

Can’t speak for KRR6581, but I have found northern like about the same bait as bass. When I first went to Ontario in 1992 an old timer at the aqua port told me to ,” use anything I liked, as long as it was a Five of Diamonds.” I have gotten a lot of northern on a Five of Diamonds, but it isn’t weedless and you need to get back in the weeds and “cabbage.” I have gone pretty much to all weedless baits. For larger northern I like large spinner baits. Johnson Silver Minnows (silver and gold) are weedless and when the fish turn on can’t be beaten. But a mad or hungry northern will hit almost anything!

Small mouth bass seem to hit spinners as well, but smaller ones

I’m not sure if you’ll believe me, but the team with the winning weight caught them all on a drop shot using a ZMan Trick Shotz in the twilight color. My partner canceled at the last minute and since it was a team tournament I couldn’t fish. One of the winners and I fished this tournament last year together and watched a guy slamming them on a drop shot. So I reminded my last years partner to use the drop shot. He and his brother did and they won the tournament Saturday on it.

Did you ever encounter muskies there?
