Broke a rod pulling out something heavy. Could be stingray or a nurse shark. Not something I target but I get it from time to time.

Strange how the rod broke and not the line. And the drag on the reel wasn't set too high. Weird.

And it's a Tiger Elite jigging rod. Rated for 80-130lb line. And it had 50lb braid from Amazon. Some non-name braid that broke at 29lb when tested with a luggage scale.

Wonder if it might have been damaged somehow before you hooked up on something with some size, it’s not like an ugly stick to snap on a fish.
As RJS would say. Just saying

They are the only rod I use. Never had a problem, even when a hard to loosen snag. Interesting, as Sgt Shultz would say.

Gotta be a bad blank. My tigers are orange. New model? Sorry that happened. 80# sounds indestructable.

Call them. I'm sure they will make it good. That's all I use also

Ugly Stix are virtually indestructible. That's really surprising to hear KG. I agree with Gordon--drop them a line.

I recently purchased a three piece travel rod. Intrigued by the 29 " loa. Soft case, 7', heavy 20/50 2-8 oz. My Penn 210 fit just right. I'm leary of two ferrules though they look good. Graphite/epoxy like the tiger. It 's called crazy tornado. Amazon china. I have high hope, it's a good looking rig. A compact, travel kit.

This is the reason I don't own any Ugly Stick rods. Broke one on a 15lb Smoker and damn near lost it. Got rid of it and have been a Fenwick or Daiwa rod owner ever since. No thanks on the Ugly Sticks.

Sorry to hear that Rob. I never had one break. You might have gotten a reject.

Broken a lot of rods, but none of my ugly sticks. Still use them so they must be old by now.

I was looking at the Ugly Stix offerings at BPS the other week and it appears they are using similar if not the same graphite blanks as the more expensive brands, while the older models were made of spun fiberglass, which made them virtually indestructible. Sure the graphite blanks are lighter and more sensitive, but the tradeoff I think is they're stiffer and more brittle. So I'm guessing that was the case with your rod, KG.

I like the WonderRod. Remember the hollow, spiral wound fiberglass? My 12' three piece rods are just fine. The folding spring loaded, stripping guild I nurture into position. Oil that old spring. We've two, they are fun rods. They are spinning rods, though I use a conventional Penn 66 on mine. Always thought it funny I'm using a 12' rod to catch 12" surf perch. Now I see the boys walking the surfline with trout rods, 1/2 oz carolina rigs catching perch right out of the waves. I tried it. Still do my best plunking squid right behind the waves. Who knows, Gotta hold your mouth right. They are near 40 years old, steel ferrules and all. I still wet them occasionally. My G2's lost guide inserts, bought a ceramic ring kit. Couple dots super glue holds the fix in place. I like Shakespeer.

You say another ugly stick broke, not your first one?

I have a friend broke several longer Salmon or Steelhead rods...he liked to leave them rigged, and let a foot hang out the back of his Bronco, forgetting and closing the window was not something an Ugly Stick will withstand. The third time he tried to take one back where he bought it they refused to replace it and told him he better figure out how he was breaking them, because it wasn't the fault of the manufacturer.

Look closely and see if it looks like there is a nick or scrape where it broke, at least you will know it was not a manufacturing flaw.
