Do carp hit lures?

They are a Chub, the largest member of the Minnow family Ed , and a distant relative of carp. They don't have the downward facing mouth of a carp or sucker. They will hit lures, flies, and bait.

Hello Mistred64. I only have limited experience with carp fishing and only know about using bait like corn. There are several members on here that have more experience fishing for carp, and they may have the answer. But in a related manner, have you guys ever seen the movie "Lifeboat." Alfred Hitchcock directed it and it was in the mid-forties. They are in the lifeboat starving and they decided to use the rich womans shinny bracelet as a lure to catch a fish. The underwater shot shows a carp of all things swim up and take the "lure."

Growing up on the farm, I would spend a lot of time doing my fishing in the creek. You could catch chubs until the cows came home. (Sorry) You would come back to the barn and throw them on the ground and cats would come running from everywhere!!!

I caught many carp on jigs and spinners in NJ. They like yellow lures. It took 55 minutes for me to reel in a carp on 2 lb test line in the Delaware River current.

I went trout fishing for the first time this year in a stream near my home. I only managed to hook 2 trout and both got off before landing but didn't matter too much as it was a delayed harvest area. My second cast produced a fallfish about 6 inches, but then a little later I caught this one. It put up a good fight and thought it was a trout till it got closer and realized it was another fallfish. This one was a "trophy" for me as it was the biggest one that I can remember catching. It was about 12 or 13 inches and had a nice girth to it. Thought I would come on here and brag. Have any of you ever caught one this size or bigger? I only fished for an hour and gave up as this stream runs thru an old abandoned pasture and the banks are so over grown with thickest stuff you have ever seen. trying to move to a new spot is an exercise in itself!

Had to look it up. Chub is a member of the Carp family which has many species. Also remembered when I lived in Manhattan smoked chub was offered at Zabar's and other Kosher deli.
That was a great catch Knot!!! What did you do with it?

The creek chub looks similar to the fallfish with a more prominent lateral band and smaller scales. Creek chubs may be distinguished from other small minnow species by a dark spot at the base of the dorsal fin.

Thanks Kandy. I was surprised by the size of it and of course took pictures. It put up a nice battle on light tackle and I was happy to release it. I would have liked to catch more that size since the trout were far and few between.

Nice catch Knot so fast. Reminds me of our Sacramento pike minnow. Good fighters, a member posted a picture of a huge one last year.

Fallfish are fun to catch. They put up a fairly good fight. I live in northeast PA also. Been catching alot of bullheads lately. Going for crappie tomorrow. Have fun fishing.

I fished the Wallkill River in the 70's for LMB. When I used a white caribou streamer on day I caught a 10# carp. The next time I used the same streamer I caught a a LMB.

I never caught a carp on a lure or heard of anyone doing it, but I would bet once in a while they do.
