I went trout fishing for the first time this year in a stream near my home. I only managed to hook 2 trout and both got off before landing but didn't matter too much as it was a delayed harvest area. My second cast produced a fallfish about 6 inches, but then a little later I caught this one. It put up a good fight and thought it was a trout till it got closer and realized it was another fallfish. This one was a "trophy" for me as it was the biggest one that I can remember catching. It was about 12 or 13 inches and had a nice girth to it. Thought I would come on here and brag. Have any of you ever caught one this size or bigger? I only fished for an hour and gave up as this stream runs thru an old abandoned pasture and the banks are so over grown with thickest stuff you have ever seen. trying to move to a new spot is an exercise in itself!

I’m not sure I have ever seen one of these. Looks a little like a carp but not!! Interesting to me to say the least.

According to the internet, it is related to a chub and supposed to be the largest member of the minnow family!

To me minnows we’re just baby trout or whatever. I didn’t know it was a separate group of fish.

That’s a big fallfish for a stream Knot, they fight and hit like maniacs. Once in a while catch them a bit bigger when fishing the Delaware river.

I thought so myself. At least for me. Thats why I asked. After I released it I wondered if it was a Pa. record. The record is from Virginia at 3.9 pounds! But the internet says that 15 to 19 inches is more like it.

I've never caught one Rich. I've seen smaller ones in some brooks around here, but nothing that big.

Wow!! Thats a big fish. I never heard of a fallfish. But looking at it it reminds me of when I went fishing with my Dad when I was A whole lot younger we would catch something similar to that and it was called a sucker almost like a carp.
Congrats on your catch. 👏

Yes Fred, I have caught a fair amount of them over the years but mostly 5 or 6 inches. The internet says they are good fighters on light tackle and I can attest to that with that one!

Thank you, Lady Quilter. It was big for its species, I thought.

Wow, that is a big fall fish. If you have a secret Musky spot that would be a frat bait. It would have to have large Muskies to handle that fallfish

I've never heard of a fall fish. Looks like a carp to me. If it's not a carp can someone explain the difference? The only difference to my knowledge is carp don't take lures as far as I know.
Do carp hit lures?
