For kayakers(and other boaters, especially anchored boats): be very aware of floating logs, piers, tree trunks getting onto or into your boat. They can sink you, so know what to do to get around them. Others on this site with more experience than me, please advise newbies about this hazard.

Another potential hazard is waves from ships and barges washing you onto the shore. If beach is steep it can flip you on to your side! Be warned, it could happen.
