Perhaps a live rat would be more attractive to the fish. Who's gonna bait the hook?
On the upside, any fish that takes a live rat is definitely gonna be big enough to brag about!
About the biggest live bait I've used was a large grasshopper. I used crazy glue to put the hook on its back.
It *should've* worked, but I was skunked.
My grandson caught a bass that had a small turtle 🐢 in its belly

Hopgrassers are great bait. They don’t have to stay alive to work their magic.

At the end of summer, one of the local TV outdoors show was him and some buddies fishing at night in a fairly high mountain lake with mouse “flys” on big fly rods. The were catching huge tiger trout, one after another. I’ll see if I can find a picture of one of the fish they were catching. If I could catch a fish like one of those, I’d knock a rat on the head and put a treble or two into it. I could care less if the rat wakes up or not!
I remember planning with my buddies on the school bus to all pick up our phones on the party line at the same time to chat after dinner.

Hey 69, what makes you think rats can't swim? Maybe the ones you've been around can't but the ones I've seen and been around could certainly swim. Heck, there's even a big rat Bass lure that people use to catch Bass.
I never have used one but I know that people do use them in certain places. Just Sayin.
Ones I saw hit the water never came back up. Pretty certain watching with a miners head lamp. I stand corrected. I researched a little farther and Britannia says most can swim, which lends the understanding that all cannot. Of course we know muskrats can. I also caught a mouse on my boat. Must have been stowed away over winter. Rather than kill him, being close to shore, I put him overboard to permit him to swim to freedom. He never came up once he was in the water. Yet I have caught bass on mouse immatation lures. Only said what I have seen and believed. Thanks for pointing out my incorrect statement. No offense taken.

Thanks buddy, no offense meant.
I suppose they are just like dogs and humans. Some can swim and some can't.
I had never thought of a dog that didn't know how to swim but there are ALOT of them that can't.

To those thrilling days of yesteryear…..
All great memories Wullfy. My wife grew up on a farm with a party line and an operator would ask you who you wanted to call. One time she wanted to call the neighbor kids. She cranked the phone and the operator, an older girl from her church, said "who do you want to call Jeannie" scared her so much that the operator knew who she was she hung up.
When I was in college we had a gas war. Regular was 19 9/10.
Having dinner with my 88 year old mother today. When she started driving at age 16 gas was 18 cents per gallon. If you do the math that was 72 years ago. As a graduate nurse she made 88 cents per hour.

In 1964 my wife made 75 cents per hour working at the college library. I made $1.25 at a typewriter repair shop. Got us through college with help from the families. Our first son was born the day of my last final of the semester in January of 1966. Only one more semester to graduate. The $.19 9/10 gas went up to $.25 9/10.
