What is the best Catfish lure?
I'm somewhat new to Catfishing and was wondering what lures will help catch the big boys? Is live bait better than plastic?
Chicken livers. Fish parts ( meat fins etc from cleaning a fish). Soak whatever you use in oyster juice ( sauce in can after eating oysters). Worms soaked in fishy juice. Whenever you clean fish save the scraps and freeze them in a milk jug with top cut off. Dice it up into tiny pieces before freezing it. Put the frozen stuff into area you want to fish. Once you ever find the fish you want keep putting your fish cleaning parts etc in that same area. Return to same place to catch them again. There will always be more of similar fish in same place later unless big flooding happens and changes the shape of the bottom of river.
Whatever you don’t eat,they will.
He asked what the best lure is. Now I'm of the opinion that if you're gonna go there and fish for catfish with lures, you're gonna hafta have a lot of patience, and you're gonna hafta sift through a lot of other fish. But you will catch an occasional catfish. I know I have fishing for other species. I caught one once an a white spinner bait. But I guess if I was gonna choose just one, it would be the kastmaster. That'll catch just about anything. I've caught a few catfish with it over 60 or so years of fishing. But if you really want to catch catfish, don't use a lure. Use bait. And mister twister is correct. And they'll eat what you eat too. They like food. And they find it by smelling it.
Best is uncooked food. More good smell the better. I always use good food ( not rotten) for fish and crab... I will be eating them and the food they eat is in the pan or pot possibly especially with crab. I don’t think you will hook many cats on lures.
Chicken livers. Done deal .
First thing on my list. I hook Channel Cats on John Day River on just NightCrawlers or fresh cleaned fish parts of the Small mouth Bass In same place. I throw my rig into deepest part of any hole I can. We fillet them and have fish fries. Breaded in Kroger brand chipotle and lime ... thin layer of fresh hot oil. We do not deep fry. Just pan fry. Thin oil. Eat like kings
Kroger Chipotle and lime Panko . Cut it with cornmeal or your other favorite fish breading. Best you ever had.... any fish

Chicken liver is the only way.
As far as *lures* go, A large Swim Bait will entice a large Blue Cat if it is in the mood..
As far as *bait* goes,,for Channel Cats most *anything* Chicken breast soaked in cherry, black cherry koolaid with heavy garlic, Chicken livers, marshmallows, worms, etc.
For Big Blues, cut bait, is very productive.

I use shrimp a lot. Have used hot dog winers, and worms. Just got some bacon to try. Gonna go again today if I can. I use two rods and usually title line.
I primarily fish for channel cats. I use: shrimp, chicken breast, nightcrawlers, cut bait including fish heads, minnows. You never know what they will want on any given day. I drift fish and usually put out 2 or 3 different offerings to zero in on what they want on any given day. Early in the season I like to use minnows or small panfish caught on the lake I'm fishing.
