Gorgeous fish and thanks for the info, if I ever get to where I can fish for those.

And if we were to go to such lengths the outrage and outcry would be deafening.
That is a nice steelhead, Maniac! Sure looks yummy. They are one of my favorite fish to eat. And catch, but haven't had the pleasure this year. Congratulations

It’s been slow throughout the entire area of SW Washington for Steelhead this winter. I changed strategy today. With the morning temps in the 20’s, I decided to skip the morning and wait until the water warmed a bit in the afternoon. I guess you could say that it may have made a difference.
It made for a nice dinner for several family members tonight
Great looking fish,nice catch 🎣
There's nothing like changing strategies to get what you want. Congrats on the hunch. The best fishermen always switch gears if things are not working. Great job!
Maniac,
I am 63 years old and very round. My knees and back are torn up from working harder than I should of when Iwas in my younger years. I used to bank fish the Puyallup and Green 30 years ago. I/we purchased a new Alumaweld last summer. I have yet to put a fish in it. I have been fishing the Columbia at the mouth of the Cowlitz mostly. I did bank fish on another SW Washington River last spring. My hunting/fishing partner and myself are headed down for the Sportsmans show in Portland next Wednesday. We plan to get a motel room somewhere down there and then bank fish a few spots one our way back. We are just not sure where to go down there, and neither one of us has bank fished down that way. I have been using a Mustad fixed float set up. I need to get the stuff and try a sliding Bobber set up like that.
Great fish,
Jim Bradbury

I fished the fixed floats for many years. I really like them, but tangles on the cast are a serious problem as you set deeper. Never a good situation with braid. The fish don’t care what bobber you use anyway😀.
You will cross three good steelhead streams as you travel along I5. You can access the Lewis at Woodland. The hatchery area has bank access in several spots.
The Kalama can be excellent. There are spots to pull off and fish along the river road.
The Cowlitz is a big stream that is best accessed by boat. I’ve noticed quite a bit of fishing activity at the confluence with the Toutle from the bank.
Bob’s in Longview could give you some pointers on all three of those streams if you call.
I live on the Washougal River. I’m fortunate to have my drift to myself on most mornings. It’s impossible for other bank fishermen to get to my spot without crossing private property. I love to talk with the drift boat anglers as they go by. I always pull my gear out and invite them to go ahead and fish it. They are often times pulling plugs or bait divers. I like to get the scoop on what has passed by me. Most are friendly and courteous, but occasionally I run into a boat full of jerks who just scowl at me and won’t engage with me. I just figure that they must be having a bad day. I’m sure they are disappointed to see me there because I live on one of the best holding drifts on the lower three miles of the river.
I know of several other drifts that are fairly easy public access, but they are known by, and fished by the locals.
I would be happy to host you for a morning of fishing if you’d like. You’ll need hip boots or waders to fish the Washougal or most any of the places mentioned.
You can fish from shore just above and just below the Blue creek launch. You need hip boots or chest waders to get around the trees. Good chance there will be lots of company, but i have found people friendly enough. Another place is further up at the dam near the salmon hatchery. Good luck.
