Just sitting around wondering what some of the weird or unusual catches you stagers have caught over the years. One of the most embarrassing and weird catches for me was an open umbrella. I was practicing for a tournament and using a jig when I felt the tap of what I thought was a fish, set the hook and the fight was on. It ran left, then right, then back left again and was heavy. Finally started bringing it up and to my surprise it was an open umbrella. The upside was, it got my adrenaline flowing for a bit and I found out I was using a pretty good rod.

What is the citation weight for umbrellas there?
Fishing Fulton pier at Rockport, Tx. My grown son started hollering, come here pops, I got something big ! I ran to the end of the pier where a small group watched him reel up a telephone line about 3 inches in diameter.
Caught several rods, but most unusual was an electric waffle iron in the Potomac River near the old Wilson bridge.

Came across another one the year before floating next to some boats in a slip inside Newport Beach Harbor (CA)…. Number 3 was not a pretty sight approx 40 years ago surfing 🏄♀️ in southern calif when I bumped into one inside the surf line. Subject had been in the water eaten and rotting away for weeks… at first I thought it was a dead seal. Nope.
Have you ever thought about joining Search and Rescue? I believe they could use your magnetism. I say that with a touch of tongue in cheek even though its not funny. You have to admit, that is highly unusual for anyone to find that many bodies by accident. I have known one other person that hooked a body while fishing. It would probably give me nightmares for a while.

Depends on whether you keep it or throw it back.

My father was a mortician… and I was in law enforcement for 42 years. Guess being around dead bodies has just been the norm… interesting you mentioned search & rescue. I reached out here in Montana and volunteered for exactly that. Never heard back. But I rather catch bass than bodies. Hahaha
I was walleye fishing with my brother in northern WI at night. We were fishing very near a bridge that went over the lake. My borther suddenly had a very big one on and he fought it hard. I was the netman so as it got closer to the boat I got the net and turned the flashlight on. I could not believe what I saw. He had hooked a skunk. I said stop reeling I have to get the knife and cut the line. He said are you sure so I shown the light again so he could see better and he agreed. I cut the line. We figure the skunk was swimming from one side to the other side of then opening under the bridge. That was freaky!
My grandfather caught a muskrat while night casting for bass many years ago. apparently the animal swam across his line and dove. Bait flipped around and caught itself. Unfortunately the animal strangled - or probably fortunate that it did as I have no idea what you do with live muskrat flopping around outside your boat. Cut the line I guess.
I was trolling Reelfoot Lake with two rods, one on either side of the boat. The rod on the left side took a sudden lunge and I grabbed it and set the hook. After reeling with some effort, and feeling the jerk of a fish, I finally saw my lure hooked into a pretty nice rod and reel outfit! What luck to gain another outfit someone had lost to the lake! Then I realized it was MINE! A nice bass had grabbed its lure and, unbeknownst to me, had jerked the rod into the lake. Then luckily my other lure had snagged it. And when I retrieved my submerged reel, I was able to reel in the bass on IT’S lure.
Fishing from a boat under a pier in Redondo, Washington, between Seattle and Tacoma. Pulled up a heavy deadweight. It was a giant Pacific octopus, probably 12 foot or better.
My ex-wife was the Queen of bringing up all kinds of weird stuff. From fishing poles to flipflops to sunglasses to even bringing up a pistol! My self, I got an old fishing pole with a zebco reel 🙄
I caught a tire in Stones River West thought I had a big ass cat played for about 5 minutes and got a tire to surface on 8 lb test lol
