Just sitting around wondering what some of the weird or unusual catches you stagers have caught over the years. One of the most embarrassing and weird catches for me was an open umbrella. I was practicing for a tournament and using a jig when I felt the tap of what I thought was a fish, set the hook and the fight was on. It ran left, then right, then back left again and was heavy. Finally started bringing it up and to my surprise it was an open umbrella. The upside was, it got my adrenaline flowing for a bit and I found out I was using a pretty good rod.

A branch with about a dozen lures on it was probably the most interesting non-fish thing I ever reeled in.

Fishing the Detroit River, on 2 separate occasions I caught fishing rods
With reels. I was jigging both times and hooked both rods through the rod tip guide.
Kind of amazing when you think of the odds..

You were able to stock some supplies at least.

I would call that a professional hook set.

That could be good, if crabs were in it.

On the tip of Sandy Hook thought I had a huge striper..it was a landing net probably fell overboard from a passing boat. In Atlantic Highlands, thought I was hung up on something but was able to get it in with Ugly Stik. Very old crab pot covered with gob and gunk, abandoned years ago. Nothing in it.

Both of those cases got your heart pumping, I’m sure. Hard to beat an Ugly Stik when you want to land something heavy.

As a young tweener, my mentor put a an old 33 vinyl record on my line when I went to the pot. He said I had nibble while I was gone and I should check my bait. The whole time I was fighting it in he was screaming 'that's gotta be a record!!!'
Does that count?

That's hysterical PLS!!!!

I think I'm the guy losing all the stuff in the waters that you all are describing.
I can imagine that an open umbrella would be one hell of a fight!!

Hooked several rods, but the most embarrassing catch was a Bowfin, called a lot of different names but a fighter. Fishing a bayou with maybe another 5 boats around, fish was biting. I hooked it, and it pulled the front of the boat sideways. My fishing partner grabbed the net, and I noticed everyone was watching. bowfin, dogfish, choupique is some of the names.

Once fishing a Texas rigged worm on Lake Travis in Austin I hooked a submerged limb that came with it's very own catfish size spinning rod and reel. Both were totally encrusted with zebra mussels. Gave the rig to my son to study as he is a research physicist and was researching ways to kill or sterilize the critters. They are tough, prolific and will cut even braid if you get into them in brush or rocks.
