Just sitting around wondering what some of the weird or unusual catches you stagers have caught over the years. One of the most embarrassing and weird catches for me was an open umbrella. I was practicing for a tournament and using a jig when I felt the tap of what I thought was a fish, set the hook and the fight was on. It ran left, then right, then back left again and was heavy. Finally started bringing it up and to my surprise it was an open umbrella. The upside was, it got my adrenaline flowing for a bit and I found out I was using a pretty good rod.

I once caught an old box spring mattress, material was long rotted off so it was just springs. When I got it on shore thre was a couple hundred lures on it in various stages of rusting away. This was in a small creek that I fish for smallmouth bass in every year.

A few years ago I was salmon fishing with a buddy that was using a surf rod for salmon. He was using an expensive $10 spinner He was able to cast out 3/4ths across the river and he got hung up and lost that spinner. A couple of days later two women came down and were using the same type of spinners with surf rods and would cast them out about 40 feet and were trying to fish the bottom with a spinner. I went over and tried to teach them how to use the spinners they bought from the local marina. One lady let me use her rod and I was able to cast 3/4ths across the river and when I brought the line in it had my buddy's spinner attached to their spinner. They didn't want to cast and real so they just left.

As a young tweener, my mentor put a an old 33 vinyl record on my line when I went to the pot. He said I had nibble while I was gone and I should check my bait. The whole time I was fighting it in he was screaming 'that's gotta be a record!!!'
Does that count?

👍😹 Do you remember the name of the record? Were you fishing with Bill Dance…….?

👍😭 I can see how the umbrella might mimic a fish—breaking left and right.
Caught a fishing rod.
Snagged a nice bass on his side that I lost when I was a kid. Impressed my little brother.
And snagged the rock bass in the picture

Caught a 31 lb carp in the tail on 10 lb Trilene line on a Zebco 33 closed faced spincast reel. Took over 30 minutes to get it to the boat and it flipped its tail and broke off. I know it was 31 lbs because it had scales on it. Naw, it was a really big carp that's for sure.

Well…kinda gross, but as a teen was fishing with my dad…..he took a dump and wiped with his boxers and sent them to the bottom. Went back to the same hole next day and guess what he caught……..yup.

It counts in my book. Pretty good thinking on your buddy’s part.

Hooked several rods, but the most embarrassing catch was a Bowfin, called a lot of different names but a fighter. Fishing a bayou with maybe another 5 boats around, fish was biting. I hooked it, and it pulled the front of the boat sideways. My fishing partner grabbed the net, and I noticed everyone was watching. bowfin, dogfish, choupique is some of the names.

I have caught bowfin in Florida. Didn’t know what it was until my buddy told me. Not a fan of bowfin.

Came across another one the year before floating next to some boats in a slip inside Newport Beach Harbor (CA)…. Number 3 was not a pretty sight approx 40 years ago surfing 🏄‍♀️ in southern calif when I bumped into one inside the surf line. Subject had been in the water eaten and rotting away for weeks… at first I thought it was a dead seal. Nope.

I was fishing for striped bass with friends in the delta near Rio Vista, CA and trolling Yozuri plugs when my buddy George’s rod was yanked out of the rod holder and into the Sacramento River. He’s a very avid fisherman and always ran the finest gear, this time an Avet reel with G-Loomis. I grabbed my spare rod and hooked his setup on the second cast lol he couldn’t believe it!! He was so excited to see it on the end of my hook. What was even cooler is he tipped it over, shook out the water and kept fishing!! Great catch and saved some of his $$$
