sounds good I am hoping I can make it down that way and book a trip and go out with you this coming year sometime.

Hey DC look at the pictures I post. It is example of the yummy Lings being hooked currently. The biggest are always December til February.

I like cooking it. Melts in your mouth fresh fried or baked properly.

I was quite pleased in March further south with Jar. I don’t think Winchester has the constant Fishing Pressure like Newport / Depoe Bay has.

yes lines are good eating. nice pictures haven't seen that kind of catch since I use to go out off of Vancouver Island and that was 50 years ago. we would just jig with a lead filled pice of crime handle bar and catch lings and red snapper on just a hand drop line with 100lb mono on it

I caught nothing on my last freshwater fishing trip and saltwater fishing trip in NJ. Cold water fishing is not good.

must of worn heavy gloves. copper filled with lead and whole large squid is common now. use it as ling bait. then a rockfish lure with two shrimp flies above it to target ling and rockfish on same drop to bottom.

Jeff St Pete’s will fish bite when the temperature drops so fast today? Or tomorrow when it’s going to be cold in the morning but warm up a little in the afternoon. How about next week when it goes back up close to 80 degrees?

I used to fish all year long. I always caught more fish in cold weather

I can not really say. Some of my best days have been predicted to be bad days. But I can say for certain, that they will not bite if you are sitting at home watching TV, or sitting in your car looking at the water and foundering if you should go out. I do not often fish any more if the temp is below 50 degree, but only because of physical pain on my broken body. Other than that, I don't even look at the tables, pressure or other predictors. The only thing I look at is the weather and wave forecasts for safety reasons and what to wear. I also look at the tides if saltwater fishing to know where to set up for the best current situations through the day.

Nick showed the hot bait on one of them those fish are all from about 5 days ago. The bait I was defining was what Tim Abraham the main guide at Winchester Bay charters uses. Never skimped on bait...told deckhand to replace squid if tentacles were missing.
/
I know that color that nick was showing us ( rust or copper ) attracts lings in North Central California Pacific Ocean as well as up here. The copper/lead thing is for electrolysis (noise/electricity created )as well as weight. Bait fish also emit electric current ( noise ) and it is another tactic in fishing that has been discovered.

I am not sure if it was wacky rigged or if just put on a large lead headed jig. That Color is a favorite of many people targeting Lingcod. When I was on a Charter with Jarheadfishnfool in Morro Bay area a fisherman hooked several good sized lings with very similar color.

If you have a Facebook acct. Nick Green in Lincoln City is the Deckhand I chat with. Could track him down if so inclined.

There are definitely species that don’t actively bite if temperatures drop below certain levels.

I don't know I'd it is true but I was once told some of the lakes in the high Sierra Navada mountains freeze solid with the fish and when they thaw the fish wake up and are still alive. it that case I would say I. the winter they mist likely do t bite
