Personally, my favorite name for crappie is "fish" when accompanied by "and chips". In my opinion, not the best fresh water fish on the platter, but close to it.

I first fished for them in Louisiana, the guy who showed me called them Crappy, not Croppy, here my uncle kept correcting me, so now I go with the Croppy like everyone else here in California seems to call them.

Anyone else call them Crappy?

In my section of Tennessee, most people call them “crappy”. However, sometimes you can hear “cropping”.

Crappie or croppie have many many names like Sac Au Lait, Strawberry perch, Lamplighters, Speckled perch etc.. It doesn’t matter what they are called, they are well sought after and delicious tablefare.
