I first fished for them in Louisiana, the guy who showed me called them Crappy, not Croppy, here my uncle kept correcting me, so now I go with the Croppy like everyone else here in California seems to call them.
Anyone else call them Crappy?

Born in crappy land, now in croppy land. Been through both elsewhere. I just go with the flow. Jokes about each abound.
Same here buddy, Louisville, Ky. Just as long as I'm catching a huge load of them. Best eating fish next to Bluegills.

How did the crappie, a popular and extremely tasty gamefish in New York and throughout the country for that matter, get its uncomfortable-sounding name?
The common name (also spelled croppie or crappé), comes from the Canadian- French “crapet,” which refers to many different members of the sunfish family. The fish was originally native to Canada and northeastern parts of the U.S., but has since been transplanted to, and fished for in 48 U.S. states.

Born and raised within 30 miles of you. crappie!
In NJ, calico bass or crappie. A guy from France at Carnegie Lake didn’t like the name crappie for such a beautiful fish. I first heard the term croppie on the Flying Fisherman tv show more than 60 years ago. Sac-a-lait is great 👍.

Yes, I do, but then again where I come from you would use minners to catch Crappy, and Minnows to catch Croppy. Just sayin

I have heard them called croppy, crappy, calico bass, white perch, specks, and paper mouth
Actually, when my parents lived in Louisiana, they call them sac-a-lait
sac-à-lait (SOCK-uh-lay): crappie. “We caught 30 sac-á-lait around that one sunken treetop.” truite (TREET): minnow. “Some call them cocahoe minnows, but in Louisiana, they are truites de cocahoe.”Nov 26, 2018
