Fishing Platte River @ Sportsmen's Paradise. Catch 5# Brownies , Rainbow, and got two 1 # Brookie. I fish bait with sliding sinker & drift. Technique is fine BUTT pinching down barbs. Still have trouble removing for release if to stuck they end up on table. Can't find barbless Hooks anywhere ? Currently in mountains west of Woodland Park Colorado. No Amazon !!!
You might try an Eagle Claw L42 in an appropriate size. Use pliers to open the gap if necessary. These are an Octopus style hook. It also helps to snell the hook to your line.

The reality is if you are fishing with bait you are typically not worried about releasing them because they are swallowing the bait...the idea of barbless hooks is that they are on artificial lures that have a far higher likelihood of catching the lip.
Catch and release zones prohibit the use of bait for this reason, it's artificial only.
For pinching down barbs I got a really solid pair of smooth duck bill type pliers that can crush down to the thick part of the barb, then take a small round 1000g stone and smooth any edges.
The wardens here reportedly will do some really stupid things checking whether the barb area is smooth enough. My wife and I got checked once and he seemed to be fine with the fact that I had obviously crushed the barbs, he didn't try to use any felt or anything to see if there were any edges.
The only place I've really seen game wardens check that close was the San Juan River in New Mexico. They will run monofilament to see if it catches. If it does you're busted.
Thanks I've been lipping most if I set on first bite. I have one of those plastic supposable hook removers but I can't get it to work? Use large hemostats. And usually kave to take fly's out from previous engagements also. Haven't met a ranger yet I fish North Idaho Montana & Colorado Lucky thx U all.

I just did a search and timco still sells barbless hooks. When I have the fly rod out I never use a barbed hook. Every time I tie a fly the barb comes off. Over the years I've saved myself a lot of grief and was able to get the hook out of a fish's mouth easily and most times not even touch the fish. Don't forget to always put em bk.
Pute... Some folks like to eat them. If they observe size and limits, it's their prerogative. Not a one pony show here. Please respect diverse reasons for the fishing practices of all.

If the regs require barbless only that is a C and R only area. If that is the case, you must use flies and lures only. Bait is illegal.
To answer your question I crimp the barbs with my tying vise or needle nose pliers.
Mark V. Not necessarily, bro. Each state has it's own fresh water regulations.

Sorry bro, the topic was barbless hooks. I would think that anybody that would respond in the thread like this would be a cashing release fisherman. No harm intended.

Pute, No sweat, man. I'm a C & R guy myself, with the exception of Tautog ( Blackfish ) . Too tasty to pass up. They feed primarily on crabs, and I think thats why they are so good to chow down on.
I eat certain kinds of fish myself. Love shellfish. But I must admit I like fishing with like-minded people. That's why I usually fish catch and release water as often as I can.
I never put anybody down for harvesting fish. But there's a place to do that and it's not in catch and release water.

Well bro, I lived in Colorado since 1979,and that has been the law since before I arrived there . It has been the same in every state I have fished in.
Thx for suggestions , and especially those like minded folk's who are so much fun to fish with. !!!
I use needle nose pliers and just squeeze the barbs down.

We were at the McCloud River...legendary class fishing. We like to eat fish, it's part of why we fish. I was cleaning two trout that we intended to have for breakfast...holy crap, people were looking at us like we were child molesters that were cleaning and gutting our latest victim. Someone had the temerity to say hey, this is a catch and release river, I said oh crap, I heard catch and eat.
What were the regs..if it was catch and release I would turn you in. There is a place for each of us. And I have!!
Jesus I just wanted info. On barbless Hooks , so many of us think the other guy is the A hole , when both are . Out 😵
