In a wild foods class I took we were told to refer to mushrooms by there Latin name because several common names were used to refer to the same one or to several different ones

Made the correlation in my head from someone saying they "tear the lobes" hence
"ear" lol.
Wild Foods class sounds interesting.

My wife and I did a foraging class. Went out in the woods and collected mushrooms and other edibles. It was really cool. Ever since then we try to go out foraging a couple times a month. Itā€™s a good excuse to get out in nature and often times end up with sone tasty treats. My wife has an app that takes the guess work out of it. Take a picture and it tells you what it is.

That's great. Would you get the name of the app for me please?

a warning on phone apps that identify plants. I have one that I stopped using. I tested it with plants I am very familiar with. examples: morning glory flower...identified as nite shade (NOT) Chicken of the woods... identified as a toxic boletus mushroom (NOT). when you get the app try it first on something you are familiar with. dandelion is a good one as it has many similar cousins.

Book stores have mushroom manuals. Also many public libraries have them available. Chantrelles are pretty common here in the fall. Morels are good too shiitake are also very good. In the fall in western Oregon there is buyers that will buy mushrooms from you. Itā€™s really profitable but I canā€™t sell em. I take em home and fry emā€¦ like fishā€¦ hook em and cook em.

No oaks here, darn. Good find mike.

You can find them on a lot of different species, just don't eat them off cherry or evergreens.

The app she uses is ā€œPicture Thisā€. The better the camera on your phone the better the app seems to work. Good luck.

The spores or the mushroom type should matter more than the hostā€¦shouldnā€™t it?

Youā€™d think but heā€™s definitely right. When my wife and I took the foraging class the instructors explained that certain types of mushrooms are only good when they grow on certain woods. Not really sure how it all works.

He also explained all mushrooms are slightly toxic without being cooked. But very few are actually deadly (at least here in Ohio).

Hope you doing well. Take care!

Yes, spores can definitively tell you the type of mushroom. The reason I said that is many people do not like the taste of chicken of the woods when they are found on evergreen and cherry trees.

Right. I have had Chantrelle from trees that gave them a different flavor for sure. I thought it was a safety warning. Mt Hood is in my backyard. There is a bunch of forests starting a mile away from here at home. It is also why fire danger is REAL too.
