Thanks fred i know you would. I dont get the feel that this guy is trying to sell me a new motor if this one could be repaired. This guy used to come to the marina on his own time to try to help me get that other piece of sh*t running with out charging me….hes gone above and beyond already so i dont think im getting ripped off….i am absolutely taking it for a second opinion…..i have that lined up already…..i just cant believe two summers…two lemons….when i finally do meet the big guy upstairs ( if i go in that direction) 1st question….” Yo….what the f*ck was THAT about?”..
Thanks fred i know you would. I dont get the feel ... (show quote)

Sounds good D. I just can't understand how the ENTIRE motor can be junk, instantaneously.
I've got a few questions for the Big Guy as well.

I disagree Danger. If you're happy with the rest of the boat, and the rest of the motor is good, I would put a rebuilt Powerhead in it, and enjoy the boat. It's approximately a 10hr job, so @100-$150 hr, you're looking at @$1,000-$1,500 for labor, and roughly $4,000 for the powerhead.
Otherwise you're starting from scratch, with an unknown quantity. Your luck so far hasn't been good, at picking winners. Why chance another disappointment, when you can repair a known quantity?
Add to the fact that this boat isn't gonna bring much money with a blown motor, so you're losing $ that you've already spent. Just my humble opinion buddy.

That would be my opinion too, Fred… 🐟on

I know….i know im losing money, but i think the problem is more serious than im describing….i may not gotten the wording right of what he said….i dont think this is a $5000 fix from what he described….i agree…if it was a few grand and im happy with the rest of the boat its a no brainer…i am not looking forward to boat shopping AGAIN! But im not dumping thousands into a boat when i can apply that money to a newer boat.

Danger, by replacing the power head as Fred has suggested you are replacing (getting) a new engine. I hope your second opinion suggests the same. But of course your the one that has to do what works best for you… 🐟on

Fred and DD, not being a motor guy myself and Danger admits he isn't either isn't either. What if the fixes you two mention isn't the cure. Is there another route to go after dishing out i think $ 7,000 - $ 8.000?

Replacing the power head on an outboard is like replacing the motor in your car. It’s just replacing the power source. With just the information given to us from Danger, there shouldn’t be any issues with the lower unit. So replacing the power head, water pump and I’d replace the oil pump while it’s apart, you’ve actually have a new motor with I’d presume a warranty. And if I was happy with the boat otherwise, I would rebuild it. At least now you would know that you have a new motor. JMO… 🐟on

Now i am with you DD. Thanks for the clarification. I see your point and although it is rebuilt, technically the major culprit will be replace with all new parts.

So instead of paying for all the bells just buy the whistle since the components are hopefully in tact.

yep I had an engine overheat and stop because of eel grass pluging the water intake. luckily after clearing it and letting the engine cool it worked OK. a couple weeks ago I had my main stop and not start it drained the battery ended up being the equvilant of the regulator forget what it is called in the outboard motor world. ordered a new one from Amazon for under $50 got it in 3 daysand back on the water at the end of the week. all this to say that is why the first thing I added to my boat was a kicker motor just in case don't want to be 5 miles out and sort of speak be up the sound with out a paddle.

Just got a call from mechanic….the motor is shot….cant be fixed….water got into it ….he pulled the plugs and water came out….i cant frigging believe this! New motor installed is 21 K….which i dont have…. Two boats, two lemons….😡🤬🤬

How does that happen? Intake manifold is the only opening that can take on water. Fuel with any water will stall before it fills up a cylinder. Oil would be all over if there was an opening big enough to take on water. Cooling system is it a closed or open system? Did you throw a rod? I don’t claim to be a total expert, but this isn’t making sense to me. Any other opinions out there???

Sorry to hear about your boat motor. I looked up Facebook Marketplace for your area. Here is a link for boat motors for sale. You can also look at Craigslist for motors in your area.

Not trying to sound funny or be an ass but check your kill switch. We were about to pull a boat out of the water in Canada and take into a town over an hour away and someone came down the dock and suggested checking it.
That was the problem kill switch in about 1/2 off 1/2 on position this was after about 3 hours of working on motor.

From reading all of Dangers post i doubt it, but i know what you mean.

Can't tell you how many times in my plumbing service calls for a garbage disposer not working, i said did you check both circuit breakers before i get there.
