I used to fish for blues at the mouth of the Patuxent River on the Naval Air Station. 50 years ago. There weren't any stripers around. And like I said, when they were biting it was like a feeding frenzy, it didn't really matter what you threw out there, they would try to eat it.

I used to make Broomstick poppers in work, in my spare time. Paint them all different colors with leftover spray paint. I had an all red one that they liked so well, that I tried it with the hook removed. I would cast into the middle of a blitz, they would latch on and I could bring them all the way back to the boat. They wouldn't let go until I picked them up, out of the water. They're very determined eaters.

Thanks for your understanding "Spirit". Since I'll be "in the suds" I dug out my oldest rod. 35 years ago my son, who was a tournament Bass angler, helped me select a 7' St Croix which has had several guides replaced over the years of heavy use and many Bass and Blues released. Oh. And several hooks buried in various parts of the hands. Gonna use it with a 2000 Stradic.
Question. Been boat fishing since about 1978. Reefs in Western L.I. Sound and Flats in Florida. 20lb. leader in quiet water did the trick. Never used wire but a kind gentleman suggested a "6" trace" to avoid cutoffs. Should I use the commercial braided stuff with a swivel/snap? Would all that "noise" get lost in the surf tumult? Would the added weight of the wire alter the attitude of a jerk bait or popper? Your thoughts.
Thanks for your understanding "Spirit". ... (show quote)

I never have a problem with a wire leader usually working the plug fast enough to not worry about it to much better than loosing an expensive or a no longer made good lure ! Welcome to the Stage Eightpound ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ๐ŸŽฃ๐Ÿ˜Ž๐Ÿ‘

I didn't realize there were so many anglers from so many varied areas ready to talk fishing. As an aside and perhaps to spur conversation tangentially. I am a violinist, knife maker, bowler and gym regular. Oh. Was a "Coastie". Taught small boat handling and inland navigation and first aid. Built two boats from frame, plywood and fiberglass. Smacked a rock with my 34' double cabin trawler.
Now I worry about my knees in the surf wash. Arghhhhh!!!

Thanks pal. Iโ€™m happy that my feet hit the floor in the morning. Mostly make knives. Practice violin. Going to the surf tomorrow morning. Low tide flooding. Gonna throw Sardine mag popper. Should be flat so the only sound will be the popper working. Look out!

Fished mostly Long Island Sound both boat and surf. Live presently in Jersey. Sold my "Flats" boat which I towed to Sarasota Bay for two months every year. Got too damn old so had to sell my beautiful pal. Now I toss top water plugs into the surf. Picked up and released a 20" Bass. Grabbed a Zara Spook. Old knees having trouble navigating the surf wash. Same old feeling of "wanting to go fishing". I'm going to throw a Sardine Yo-Zuri Mag Popper. It is about 30 years old. Last one. Don't make them any more. I know i'll lose it. Wonder how.

Welcome Eightpound to the stage glad you still got the urge to fish and good luck with your Mag Popper
definitely use a wire to keep from losing that collector.

Thanks for the sincere thoughts Billycrap2. I'm home now at 6:30am replying to you. I should be getting in my car and starting the run back home after throwing plugs into a beautiful, flat early morning ocean at low tide for an hour. Age has caught up to me. It's great to get old! Not quite accepting the "leaving behind" aspect. At 10am I'll meet a trainer at my gym. Today is upper body. Not as intense as those big muscles in the lower body which is Thursday. By the way. I strongly recommend going to a gym regularly and enlisting the help of a trainer. Muscle strength is critical as we age. Joint support is very big. Well. Going to the ocean for the 5pm low tide with my Millie. If the event happens she will take photo for all to see. Oh nooooo....

Canโ€™t get a photo to you. Thanks for your response. My son lives somewhere in Texas. Around the Austin area. Just a small aside. He was once a tournament Bass angler. He is done now. Sold his boat and all his equipment. I canโ€™t let go.

ยกWelcome to the Fishing Stage, 8#! I've got no experience with catching Flounder with hooks... Dragged up many in scallop dredges, years ago; I've also eaten quite a few we dragged up in shrimp trawls, around Cape Canaveral, back in the early 1980's. They are certainly one of my favorite fish to eat!

Thanks Able Man. So you were a commercial trawler? At sea in all weather. Not my cup of tea but kudos to you.

Well, thank you, 8#... Yeah, I have engaged in the commercial harvest of Crawfish, in Louisiana (using Homemade "Chicken Wire" traps); trawling for Scallops in the Atlantic & trawling for shrimp in the Atlantic & the Gulf of Mexico; gill netting in the Atlantic & the Gulf; purse seining in the Atlantic & the Gulf AND right IN Tampa Bay... Longlining for Tuna & Swordfish (and several other species) in the Gulf Stream, between Miami Beach and Jacksonville; also fished a few "Drift Nets" (ยกOh, what Blasphemy!) in the Atlantic... Encirclement gill netting for Spanish Mackerel in the Atlantic & in the Gulf... I've not been "Fit For Duty" for nearly 30 years, now... It's a long story. Yeah, I've worked back decks in "blistering heat" and "white-out blizzards" & everything in between. I miss it, sorely.
