Just what I want to do, go fishing and shoot some as#@ho*@ thats a jerk on the boat ramp or shore and then spend the rest of my life trying to sleep on my back. Walk away boys it ain't worth it.

Nobody is going to go fishing and shoot anybody. Nobody is going to walk around acting like a “gun slinger”. The “discussion” is about protecting ourselves or anyone else who might be put into a life or death situation. Which one of you would not be totally grateful to someone who happened to be armed and at the bank or wherever else that one of your loved ones happen to be and because of his actions saved their lives. How would you feel if he hadn’t happen to be there and you lost a loved one. It’s all about protection my friends. And for the people I know, including my FS friends it’s not about intimidation and nobody’s looking for a gun fight… 🐟on

The discussion was first about jerks we meet fishing and not about armed protection. Don't get me wrong I am a life member NRA and believe in the right of self protection. The point I was trying to make is don't let things get out of hand, walk away because it ain't worth it.

My answer is "What, all life except mine?" The only way I'll ever present the muzzle of my gun to anyone is if they're a clear and immediate threat - but if that's ever the case, I'd have no more remorse than if I'd swatted a bug.

Reading all these replies with references to guns. It’s fishing and life is short enough. I know most of this is just talk but as fishermen or women and hunters I’m presuming as well. In most cases there are kids around, I personally witnessed a fistfight at a boat launch over just this type of Stupidity. We’re supposed to be examples of right and wrong, I can only imagine the scars left on those kids who probably couldn’t wait to get out fishing with their Dad and instead they see this before they even get on the water. It’s bad enough many human beings stand more divided nowadays than ever before but this type of behavior has got to stop and we should be trying to help one another than talking about what firearm you carry and the fact that you obviously haven’t learned a damn thing from Columbine shoots and the several other examples of lack of respect, self control, and patience. Geez try for a small amount of time being the better person and true sports ambassadors outdoors wise that you should be proud to display.

yes, NO personal attacks. Ain't no morons, just folks who might see things differently than you. And, they are free to be "wrong" in your view. That is what Freedom is about, yes? Peace.

Papa bear, you might know people in the crime lab in Anchorage, some are my friends. I worked at GNorthernG. I lived in Anchorage. Many of the police know me in that little town.

It still amazes me how many people know each other from that little town of over 200,000. It might be that fishermen all end up in the same places sooner or later. Years after my injury, I owned Whittier Charters for 7 years. I also guided out of King Salmon, Ketchikan and Petersburg.

Seems rather stupid how a this goes from ramp etiquette, to who has the biggest Saturday night special. It all goes back to education, has anyone ever thought the maybe publish in local papers and have signs posted near boat ramps stating things to do before getting to the ramp?

Well, since I started this….my posting was to hopefully get folks to understand to be in the moment, have all of your pre-launch prepared before you go to the ramp and not block the ramp off…..my reference to “two of them” was not worth to get in an argument over their behavior, since my main goal was to go fishing and enjoy the day.

Common sense sometimes appears to be in short supply these days😊

Agreed, Many people have zero idea about how to speed things along at a boat ramp. Fishing the Mississippi river, one boat area launched over 100 plus on a double ramp, in less than one hour. These guys knew what they needed to have ready before getting to the boat ramp.
Boat tie downs removed, all items needed to our time on the water placed in boat. Boat was checked in the drive ways at home to be sure motor starts and runs. checked battery before leaving home.
Much of boat maintenance begins at home.

Very well put Jbn. Common sense is in short supply everywhere you look. A lot of folks fly off the handle right away instead of stopping and thinking about the situation and if it’s worth going any further. IMHO

Yesterday went to put boat in after preparing to launch….there is a one lane road leading to ramp and where pay station is located. Two guys I guess had stopped to pay and then decided to get their boat ready right there blocking access to ramp…. They just looked at me, went about the task and never said they were sorry or were in a hurry. I didn’t say anything thing since there were two of them an one of me….I guess it is their world and people like me need to try and live in it… 99% of the people I meet fishing are the salt of the earth and friendliest folks you will ever meet….then there are the 1%….

It’s amazing some of the ridiculous antics that go on at boat ramps. One that I see quite common is “husband launches boat and goes to park leaving wife holding the rope to the boat (I’ve seen men doing it too) right in front of the ramp so no one else can launch until hubby gets back to his boat. Proper etiquette would be to pull the boat to the very end of the dock or around the end (if it’s a short dock) to the other side. It’s also called common sense.

Seems to me like something we attribute to the "ME" generation has spread all over: A lot of people seem to consider themselves as the center of the universe. If you make waves in 'their' universe, they boil over fast!

About ramp etiquette: When I was in high school, there wasn't much dock space at the launching ramp we often used. My Brother or I would get in the boat, Dad would back it down until the boat floated off, and we'd start the motor and hold position about 40 or 50 feet from the ramp until Dad got parked and walked back down. That really worked well, and we reversed the entire procedure when we were ready to come back in. That's a little bit tough to do when you're boating alone. About a year ago I launched alone and tied the boat way out at the end of the dock while I went to park. When I got back down to the dock, there was a man and woman launching, and the gal gave me all kinds of fussing about taking up the dock space. She was in a bikini, so I just listened to her and enjoyed the scenery. I kind of wish I'd asked her what she wanted me to do differently, and how to go about it.
