Flyguy is right, there are good guides and bad ones, just like every other profession. Guides are normally there to teach new anglers the tricks of the trade, put them on the fish and assist them with their technique. Sometimes to test the waters and show off a little they will also fish but they should always hand off the rod to the customer. A good guide is someone who makes his customers feel content with him and hopefully teaches the something about the waters and species that they are fishing. The one ting that bothers me about some guides that use live bait is that they spend my time catching bait and not fishing. Catching bait should be done on their time. I also feel a good guide should not be watching the clock to insure cutting the trip to a specific time period. This might be OK if he has another tip but if thats the case he should notify the customer ahead of time.

I would think in his best interest to do what ever he can to let you have the best fishing adventure ever for the sake of you advertising and being a returning customer ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ๐ŸŽฃ๐Ÿ˜€๐Ÿ‘

What is your opinion on your guide fishing while you are? The question was asked of me when I returned from a trip.

I go on guided trips been on 2 already this year getting ready to go on another in April
Most guides I think are very good
They should know the area you are fishing
They should be responding to your needs
They should not get angry when you mess up
They are there to help you ( if you want it )
They CANNOT give you a Guarantee of fish
They should be trained in first aid
They should have good equipment
They should make you feel like a buddy

You donโ€™t know the area ( most of the time )
You should ask if you need help with something
You should know alittle about what you are doing but your going to mess up sometime
You should treat your guide with respect he is working hard to show you a good time
You should ask about the equipment you will
Be using ( you may want to use that new rod you just bought )
You should get to know your guide ( talk to them)
You should ask if your not sure about anything or maybe a misunderstanding
If the guide gives you a good time tip them

After a while the guide will know what you can do or can not do. They do this every day they know where the fish like to be you may have never fished this area listen to them

They have done this for years. They have the training and knowledge. And they have put their money down for the boats motors
Electronics rod reels ect. This is what they do. As you know what you do on your job

Hope this helps with your questions
But just my opinion

Thanks for responding fly Guy. Actually, I was asking if you think a guide should fish with you while you are fishing. The question I was asked is why are they fishing, when you pay them to guide you.

I have let my guide fish with me he doesnโ€™t fish very long or maybe he is showing me how to do a cast and if he gets a fish he shows me how to handle it when i get one on. He should be like your buddy not your slave. It could go along way on him showing you that honey hole

If the guide is fishing to help you reach your limit, or so you have something to take home with you, that may be okay. But if he is fishing and not attending to your needs that is completely wrong. It is his job to put you on the fish!

Yes very true you are his job

A good guide can do both. And if he hooks up, heโ€™ll hand off the pole to someone who might not be catching, to experience the fightโ€ฆ๐ŸŸon

I have had that happen a lot and itโ€™s ok I fish for the fight

Most guides do there best to see the client catches fish. As a former guide the most dreaded sentence starts with "Back home we do it this away". Remember your not in Kansas anymore. Guides are in that body of water most of the year. Most good guides educate their clients. I once had a client that I told his fisherman's knot was no good for braid. He changed lures and tied his knot on a night fishing trip for bass. His knot slipped and a 9-11# bass left with his SR-13 Rapala in his mouth. Some people just St have to do it their way.

A paddlefish is the same fish as a spoonbill.

SpoonBILL?

Is that a tax if you drop your spoon at a local restaurant?

It wasn't really clear on the first post that this was the question. I am not a guide but I take guys out fishing all the time mostly as a teaching experience for new anglers. Most guides have a few spots that they know well and understand the conditions of their favorite spots. Sometimes they will try a few casts to get a feel for that particular spot or to show the customer the technique to be used for that area. Once they make that determination they should had the rod to their customer. Some guys just need to get the feel of the water y taking a few casts, I do that often but when I have guys out with me I rarely actually fish. You have to understand that some days it is good fishing and others it stinks. That even happens to the best guides. Generally they should not be fishing when they are guiding.

Fishmanj- I don't mind a guide fishing if he is a good fisherman and it doesn't take away from his guiding. If he is paying more attention to his rod than yours and whoever your with, tell him to stop and find another guide.
