I remember driving up in the mountains where I was going to hunt. I stopped the truck to try to see down into a ravine, but hard to see because of the early morning fog. I looked across the road at a bush that had a small bird sitting on a limb. it was so cute, it was a very tiny Pigmy Owl. I had never seen one before.

Saw the same thing in late 1950s or early 1960s (I think, long time ago) when going by the big plant just north of San Diego. Man, they just took off and it looked like tilted up at about 60 degrees and they were out of sight so fast. to me it was amazing!

Reminds me of being out on the Feather River with my buddy Bill, in his boat, and we got an air show by a couple of fighters, F somethings, I don't know planes, out of Beale AFB I assume. Flying right over the river at just about ground level, liked to burst our eardrums.

Yes, saw the fight/bombers from Widby Island cruising up/along the Cowlitz river, on practice bomber runs, many times when fishing it. They always flew in pairs.

Cutest critter I've seen I was maybe 10 yrs old out checking fence line in the woods. I was sitting on a stump eating an apple, pony grazing nearby when a Flying Squirrel climbed up on a root. I watched it scratch around, do a little grooming then it climbed on the toe of my boot then put its little paws up on my pantsleg. When it finally looked up and realized where it was I thought the poor thing would have a heart attack. They have big eyes to start with, his took up his whole face.

I grew up in Indiana, around South Bend, and I used to hear em and smell em in the woods by where I lived. Saw their tracks in the snow and where they had marked a tree. But I never did actually see one.
That was 60 years ago or so.

Strangest thing that my wife and have seen off of the coast of San Diego while in our boat was a giant manta ray swim under the boat while we were moving.
It’s wings were so big they could be seen on both sides of the boat.
Saw a couple of bobcats when hiking in the mountains.
Fishing a little stream in Montana I heard a lot of noise and out popped a moose.
Lucky for me it kept moving along.
Closest I’m been to one without being in a car.

I was in a tree stand in SC deer hunting and counted over 25 turkeys coming down a little gully right in front of where I was. There was a small tree laying across the gully and the fist turkey lowered his head and went under until the last one and it jumped onto the tree and then back in line. No turkey season at that time.

I'll add to things I've seen in the woods. I was turkey hunting a back pasture with a water hole. I heard a yearling deer jump the fence to get a drink of water. After the drink it walked out amongst my decoys looked at my blind where I was sitting. And started to dance around and play in my turkey decoys. As it couldn't figure out what I was. Finally I smiled and off like a shot and over the fence it went.

I have been lucky enough, guiding for years in Alaska, to have had many bear, wolf, moose and whale encounters, not to mention wing waves from the F15 pilots while fishing in King Salmon. But my favorite, was while predator calling on the Kenai peninsula. A beautiful snow owl swooped in just feet from my head before it veered off. It was my first year in Alaska. I had a big learning curve ahead of me. Had that been a brown bear I called, coming in for an easy meal, I might not be typing this.

About 25 years ago my BIL and I were fishing on a lake near Phillips, WI when we turned to see a Stealth bomber drop down over the water, below tree level, raise the nose to about a 45 degree angle and hold that position as it cruised past us (about 300yds away) for almost 1/2 mile kicking up a rooster tail at least 75’ in the air. The whole event took less than 10 seconds as that plane shot off into the clouds in a flash. The BIL and I just looked at each other and each asked if that really happened? It probably took 2-3 minutes for all the water in that rooster tail to return to the lake. Luckily, we were not in their path, but I suspect they knew that. I believe they were practicing for an air show near the Twin Cities. Absolutely one of the coolest things I ever saw.

Opening morning of Elk season. I'm sitting under a Hugh bush, when a monster bull comes up and starts eating the brush I'm hiding in. The minute I moved a muscle, he sensed it and bolted. Twice, I've had cougars run across the road in front of my car on the way home. Both times, I stopped and they stopped and watched each other. My Mom was with me one time, she said all she could remember was that tail moving back and forth. Honestly, I think they could take you down with that tail. Lastly, I was chasing a wounded spike, when I came across a heard of cows watching two bulls fight. I laid down and watched the fight. Finally one Bull got a horn in the other Bulls rib, He went down and the Big bull walked off with the herd. The wounded bull was down for good, but it was a true spike only. hunt.

About 5 years ago I was dove hunting near Salina, Kansas. I was walking through some tall grass & came upon a large bull snake with a cottontail rabbit he had just squeezed the life out of. I had walked right up to the snake but he ignored me & positioned himself to be face to face with the rabbit then he opened his mouth & proceeded to inhale the rabbit. I was absolutely fascinated to watch this event from only a couple feet. I was so wrapped up I completely forgot to take out my phone for a picture or to get a video of it. I would estimate it took the snake 10 or 15 minutes to totally swallow the rabbit. After his meal he coiled himself up stayed where he was at.
