As a kid, I nearly lost interest, as nearly all we caught were 'sunnies', small perch and bull-heads, with an occasional small bass or trout ! It wasn't until my late teens/early twenties when I started learning more from a close friend (grandfather had passed by then), that I was really 'hooked' on fishing ! After catching a few decent largemouths and some very active (aerobatic) smallies and rainbows, I couldn't wait for my next fishing trip from that point on ! There's not much that I'm aware of like a smallie or trout making several jumps out of the water to get your adrenaline up and hook you on fishing !

I seconded the information that Bass Face has said about “Chunks and Wind” with power fishing lures. I helps immensely if you can fish where there is a very good chance of catching fish, the more the better. Try and keep the fishing time not a long and drawn amount of time..

Over the 67 years I've been alive, I never take any kids out to go bass fishing, walleye fishing, or muskie fishing as a first experience. As you've said...he's impatient. In order to get kids to really get interested in the lifetime hobby of fishing, they need action to start and maintain their interest. Go crappie, bluegill, or perch fishing. They'll eventually start learning how to catch bass, walleye, or muskie. Just make it fun to start your brother. I was lucky when I was a kid...Grandpa, Uncle Clem, Gerhardt (best walleye fisherman I've ever been lucky to fish with), and my Dad all taught me. I turned into a pretty good teacher over the years, too.

If it was me, I would not start him out on bass fishing. Even the most experienced get frustrated when they do not catch anything. Start him on bream, blue gill or something where he will catch fish and have fun. Then work up to bass.

Live night crawler. That's how I started my oldest daughter. At times she out fished me and her brother.

My little brother has a slight interest in fishing, and I’d like to help him explore it more, but I’m unsure of the best method. What are the best lures to use for a child who doesn’t have the most patience? I’m thinking stay away from finesse techniques and rigged worms like senkos that involve any pauses, and focus on cranks, spinner baits, and top water? Thoughts?

Worms or crickets. Start him on panfish while you fish for bass. Mike

I really appreciate your experience but for eating I wouldn't give up one bream or as we call them sunfish or a crappie for a bass. The taste between the two even though thy are in the same family is to me extreme. Mike

Winter fishing is usually a slow endeavor.take him to a Bassproshop or local tackle shop. Maybe he'll find something HE wants to fish with. *note: this might create a monster, I mean avid fisherman

Live bait is the way to go if you want to catch fish easily.
A bobber, hook and a minnow or night crawler will always
catch fish.
