That stuff caused a problem for me once but didn't prevent me from still doing it. Kid at a derby was having trouble with a Snoopy outfit, got him going, but problem persisted, pickup pin on reel was worn, and I had a nice Johnson spincaster in my truck, got it and gifted it to him. His Dad went nuts, started screaming about he could buy anything the kid needed, and got really aggressive with me. Kept my kool for a while, but eventually asked him why if that was so, how come he bought that cheap piece of junk for his son.
That sure didn't help. His wife intervened, and calmed things down, and told the boy to thank me and he could keep it and continue fishing. Seemed like that would be the end of it, but after I moved away to help with refreshments, he confronted me ad promised to kick my @$$ . Attempted the most pitiful roundhouse punch imaginable, but it never got there. Picked himself up and continued, and before I knew it, we were in the mud and shallow water. Real nut case. They went home, but wife and son insisted on keeping the tackle I had given him. Often wondered how the poor kid and wife could tolerate this stuff.
Hard to understand why this stuff happens.

You never know why people do things and again I can see that his dad was just a bully keeping his wife and kid under his thumb
I think you did a good thing. But. Maybe ask first
