I have a ridiculous amount of extra rod's and reels. After 15 years of guiding with people leaving their gear rather than paying to ship it home, I currently have about 100 to 150 left. Some of the rods are good some need repair. I have started taking two extra rod and reels with me when I go anywhere I might contact kids on the bank. When I see a kid watching others and clearly wanting to fish (You will know with a short conversation) I just give him or her rod rigged with float weight and #8hook. (be sure to include a note with each rod, so the kid does not take a whooping for stealing when he gets home. I explain where and how to get bait and let them go at it. It only takes a few minutes and puts the rod and reel where it belongs. Don't be concerned about the quality. If it will work, it will catch panfish and reasonable cats. Remember, many of us started with a cane pole. I take two as it seems I run into brother sister combos regularly. Give it thought. It is a great way to clean the shop and put dust collectors to use.

That's very good I usually do the same thing my name is Alonzo Sabree that's how I got pushed in the face by carrying extra rods when I go fishing

Caution: If a parent is in the vicinity, Clear even approaching and talking to a child with the parent first. They may be great people and parents. They are just very protective of their kids, given the state of the union. Let's be real, who can blame them.

I guess some people can't accept a well intended gift that they are not directly responsible for. I feel sorry for them. How narrow and empty their lives must be. You gotta wonder how they got that way. Very sad.
And they're teaching the kids not to trust or accept a good turn. Awful for the youngsters to have that kind of role model .........

I just turned 76 and wrote an essay for our fly fishing club recently suggesting we all need an exit strategy for what to do with all of the gear we have gotten over the years. I like the idea of getting it into the hands of young folks, perhaps through a local program at the Y the Boy Scouts or Girl Scouts or even an area aquarium (the case here in Southeastern NC). I’m in the prime of life so I’m not ready to make the switch, just to start thinking about it. I don’t want any vultures at a yard sale buying my stuff and then reselling it for twice as much. There’s a special place in Hades for those jerks. Family gets first refusal but the rest….? What thoughts do they rest of you have?

Well,I suppose you're correct about asking, but they were OK with me trying to fix his existing gear. Just gave him 3 quick shots when he tried to sucker punch me, so no he didn't get the @$$ kickin' he so richly deserved. But, that wasn't my intent, just chopped him down so he would stop. It worked, but he wanted to give it another try. Round 2 didn't work much better for him, and the Game club guys got us apart. No longer able to do that without "nasty tricks" so Im hoping it's never needed again.

Take up a marshal art class no need to go toe to toe, take him out quickly.
But stop before they consider you the aggressor.

Just out of curiosity, what do you use a tuna stick for in Montana. (pulling out stuck tractors) They are to short and to stiff in the tip for sturgeon. I have seen some nice small mouth posted, but they are good live bait size for what we catch on the tuna sticks. Most are from people that have gone out on head boats and wanted their own gear. After a trip out at the lodge using appropriate lighter more flexible gear, they don't want anything to do with those clubs. I usually only had one out if I had a client that was willing to get skunked, but wanted only fish over 100 pounds. I would put it out with a 14 to 16 inch live bait or two to three pound strip bait. The target was 100 to 400 pound halibut. I also used them for salmon shark fishing. My clients never did break the 400 lb. mark. 384 lb. was the biggest halibut I ever brought aboard.

We have sturgeon, in the Missouri, Kootenai and maybe the Yellowstone but I would have to look up the regs. What I was really thinking about is we have paddlefish, kinda like sturgeon but with the long flat paddle nose, hence the name. There’s a season here for snagging them, only way to catch one I guess. Highly managed, and they use the eggs for caviar like sturgeon. Those rods you have would be too short and heavy, would like to be able to cast pretty far on the big river. Anyway there’s plenty of second hand stores around, and always Walmart. I have a couple rods that would probably work, but wouldn’t want to put them through the abuse using them for snagging.

The ugly stick, tiger model I think, is a popular rod on the Columbia, if you don't want to fork out a lot of money. They will hold up to casting railroad spikes I am told. I have a couple custom rods given to me by a client, so I have not used the ugly sticks, but when walking along the river checking out what is going on, I see a lot of them in use.

Down here in North Carolina we have a state fishing education center in Fayetteville that takes used tackle. I think they use if for young people and wounded veterans. I’m still using my fairly impressive collection but after my two sons take what they want and my fly fishing club takes what it wants, I plan on donating them to the John E. Pechmann Fishing Center in Fayetteville, NC or to the state aquarium at Fort Fisher (south of Wilmington) that has a guy who takes old equipment and gives it to kids. Let’s get the younger generation fishing and give them rods that actually work. Those pixie rods work for a few hours- maybe even a week. But then…. IN my opinion, it is up to us to come up with our exit strategy for our collection of rods and reels. Some of us are lucky to be able to amass quite a collection. They could be sold at pennies on the dollar but why not just give them away to a group that will put them into the hands of kids or wounded warriors who will actually use them. More power to you in your endeavors. Then there is the fisherman’s prayer- “And when I’m gone, please don’t let my wife sell my stuff for what I told her I paid for it,”
