I agree with you and they are not a native bird !!

They have become such a killer of fisheries here in northern lake Michigan that the tribal gill netting has become affected to the point of the tribes looking to eradicated this federally protected satan sent flying demon.

Ditto from Lake Ontario. 20 years ago the smallmouth fishing was fabulous, now I don't waste my time

Hello Apollo. I fish Ft Gibson & Hudson lake, just down stream from Grand Lake. Lot of pelicans here too. There are flocks of cormorants in the thousands on Ft Gibson lake. Hudson has far, far too many but not the numbers as Gibson. If those pests eat a pound of fish a day each that's as much as 2 tons of fish that need to be left in the water as forage for all the fish species in the lake. I think it's time (past) for the US Fish & Wildlife service to go to war with the black Devils. Yes, they eat catfish. In the Mississippi Delta where commercial catfish ponds go for miles the owners secure permits to shoot them off their ponds. Cormorants can devastate a pond in a short time.

Like almost everything in life: It is not the cormorant that is bad. It is the excess of cormorants that is bad. The same goes with seals, sea otters and any other creature that is protected to the point that their numbers are out of balance with the order of things. I believe that includes humans

Very well put, Papabear. Couldn't agree more.

Hi bottomcoon, thanks for your comment! I talked with a guy a few months ago that fishes Lake Eufaula and they are having the same issue with cormorants eating anything and everything. I am fairly new to Oklahoma, having moved here from Oregon this year and was not aware of the strong feelings of resentment against them by such a broad range of people. In Southern Oregon, we had some cormorants, but not enough for most to be worried about, and we probably put them in the category of zebra mussels, that it is a problem, but not so much for our area in Oregon. It has definitely been a learning experience for me reading the comments on the fishing forum about the devastation these birds cause.

In 1999 we took an extended vacation to China. On the far western portion of our trip there was an evening after dinner we took a boat ride on this ultra-clear river and watched as a fisherman with a raft and fishing cormorants were working. Each bird had a ring around its neck so it could not swallow any fish. Each time a bird caught a fish it would hop back on board. The fisherman would extract the fish, give the bird a treat and it would rest a moment, sip some water, and then dive back in and continue the hunt. Was quite interesting. Just Sayin...RJS

I think the ring around its neck was a good idea. I don't think I would eat a fish that a cormorant puked up. The Chinise can have them. Just Sayin...

Yes you are right!!
But we can only Dream @!
It is sad that our Fish and Wildlife cannot make laws to help us sports men their hands are tied.
Like here in California about the Dam Mountain lion 🦁 we are over ran by them and they are hurting our Deer 🦌 herds here in the state. And now we can't even shoot Bobcats.
All I can say is Dam Politics!!
Have a great Christmas and New Year

They are horrible nasty birds. I've seen them just about wipe out trout that were stocked in some small lakes here in Texas. They should not be protected. I wonder for what reason they are protected.
