Understand! We get thousands of cormorants along with hundreds of white pelicans coming in around the September timeframe to Grand Lake. Read that a cormorant eats about a pound of fish a day, so that is a lot of fish.

Great pic, but I agree with J, those things should be wiped out as they can destroy a fishery of many year classes of fish!

Ya there toxic crap kills the trees and any other vegetation along the shore. And they feast on perch, bass, and panfish. I don’t think they eat channel cats as there populations have skyrocketed in a lot of the smaller bodies of water I fish. All that said super cool picture!!

Thanks for sharing a beautiful picture of perhaps the most hated bird in the world. I wonder why the Audubon Society did this.

They are trying to upgrade the reputation of the cormorant. Other birds such as gulls and pelicans eat fish but are not hated by everyone, so they felt something should be done by nominating a beautiful photo. They are hoping they can turn around the serious image problem that goes beyond the huge appetite of the cormorant. With the graceful picture of the bird in the water, you are supposed to look past a creature that has filthy habits, a lethal bill, beady black eyes, and no redeeming social virtues.

Well get ready. Watched three flocks of over a hundred birds heading south from the Jersey beaches last week.. they should be in SC and south by now. They're not real popular around here either.

They have become such a killer of fisheries here in northern lake Michigan that the tribal gill netting has become affected to the point of the tribes looking to eradicated this federally protected satan sent flying demon.

Like almost everything in life: It is not the cormorant that is bad. It is the excess of cormorants that is bad. The same goes with seals, sea otters and any other creature that is protected to the point that their numbers are out of balance with the order of things. I believe that includes humans

In 1999 we took an extended vacation to China. On the far western portion of our trip there was an evening after dinner we took a boat ride on this ultra-clear river and watched as a fisherman with a raft and fishing cormorants were working. Each bird had a ring around its neck so it could not swallow any fish. Each time a bird caught a fish it would hop back on board. The fisherman would extract the fish, give the bird a treat and it would rest a moment, sip some water, and then dive back in and continue the hunt. Was quite interesting. Just Sayin...RJS
