If ants work/don't work, try other terrestrial-type flies like spiders, bees,
crickets and/or grasshoppers ! Seems like some of those should produce !

Haven't tried them on trout, but when we were kids fishing for bass below the dam and would run out of worms/ 'crawlers, we'd take a willow branch, bend and tie it in a loop, put a shirt/
T-shirt over it for a net and catch grasshoppers in the nearby field of
tall grass for bait ! Worked pretty
good for bass, so I would think it should also work for trout !

Used lots of grasshoppers as a kid. Panfish and catfish, not a lot of trout around. Guess I’ll be using a grasshopper pattern here on the North Platte. Hear August is the month for trout filling up on them. Might have to go up in line weight they cast 3 flies at time a lot.
Tight lines

What a turn. Went from fishing trout release to fire ant bites. Been bitten many times. My favorite was a tarpon fishing trip to Florida. It was very early the first morning. I stepped off the parking lot to check out the water while waiting for my guide. Little did I know, standing in the darkness, I stopped right on top of an enormous fire ant bed. By the time I was able to rid myself of them, both legs were on fire from my knees to my ankles. Great start to the trip. The next morning I stayed on the pavement.

What size line did you use? Currently I have 6# mono on my reel. I’m just going with a Super Duper lure. Should it be lighter?

Johnny70 - It might help us to help you if you'd put a little more precise location in your profile - Texas is
a big state, so knowing which part
of it you're in would give everyone
a better idea of the area/waters
you may be fishing or inquiring
about !
