Has anyone had the opportunity to fish the rainbow trout in Texas waters released by the Texas Parks and Wildlife? If so, what gear was used in addition what lures actually caught trout? I’m thinking about wetting a hook. Any ideas?

Only place I knew of was in the Guadalupe river below Canyon Lake dam. Remember a big die off in late 90something because the trout feasted on a fire ant hatch.
Here’s a link about trout there.

As you probably know The trout are stocked in lots of city lakes and ponds in December and January. The trout are fed pellet food at the hatchery so they aren't used to anything else but they do get hungry. I use power baits, pieces of earth worm on small hooks and ultralight lines. Check the stock dates and wait a day or so, and try different baits.
Good luck and tight lines, and welcome to the stage, we like pics of the catch

Fire ants poison was too much for them. Just found an article from when it happened, 1998

http://www.aintnowaytogo.com/antTrout.htm

Can Fire Ants Kill You?

Yes, fire ants can kill you, though it is highly unusual. Fire ant bites transfer a poison that humans can have severe reactions to. Recent studies suggest that the poison found in the fire ant venom affects the nervous system [2].

The Red Imported Fire Ant is one of the world’s most poisonous bugs. If you come upon a pile, and only one bit you, the others would immediately follow, owing to the alarm pheromones. This translates to a significant number of bites in a short period of time. These fire ant bites may kill you in as few as 80-100 bites.

We have come to the conclusion that they bite on signal. If you have ever gotten into a nest of them you'll notice that you get several bites all at once and find a whole bunch of ants all over the body part, hand, leg or whatever came in contact with the nest. It seems like they wait till a bunch are on you then one yells bite now and they do all at the same time, we call it the fire ant dance because you jump around cuss and try to slap them off as fast as possible. I have been in them toooo many times. And they hurt as bad as wasp stings

Bugs almost took me out a few times already. Fireants would be like rattlesnake venom to my system.

Back in '72, I met a guy on a job
who came from a small town in northern Louisiana - he told me
a story about one of his neighbors
who was plowing his fields one
day, when the wind blew his hat
off !

He left it there for a few minutes
while finishing that row and stopped to pick it up on the return pass - he
put it on his head without checking
it or giving it a good shake-off, and was badly bitten all over his skull !

By the time he was found and
rushed to the hospital it was too
late ! He died from the red ant venom within an hour after getting stung !

In the spring of '83 I had a minor
run-in with those nasty little buggers
while at my folks' home in Florida !
I had parked my car on dad's lawn
and crawled under it to do an oil change - having failed to put a tarp
or blanket down first, I ended up getting the little buggers in my hair,
T-shirt and skivvies ! Had to rush
into the house, take a hot shower
and toss my clothes into a heavy-
duty trash bag and throw them
out ! Those bites burned and itched for over a week, and in some very uncomfortable places !

When my youger daughter was stationed at Valdesta Ga her toddler got into a nest of fire ants. Fortunetly mom was right close and grabbed her . it was a horrible experience for both of them, could have ended very badly.
