I eat what I catch because I like em and they’re good for ya. People say “be careful eating fish from certain places because of the contaminants in the water”. Then they go get a big Mack, fries and a large processed sugar drink from Mc Ds. without giving a second thought to all the crap they’re eating there.🤷‍♂️

Very good answer, people are funny, have a good friend drinks one glass of red wine with dinner because he says it is healthy for you. But he doesn't talk about the pack of smokes he goes through in a day

Catch and release bass is being promoted by the tournament people. More fish to catch for them. Bass are good eating but I send the oversized ones back. 1-3 lbs are better eating.

I never keep bass especially Smallmouth as they have an awful slow growth rate in most areas and don't spawn sussfully every year on average . Some studies say one year out of seven ! Ever get into a school of Smallies and catch one 13 to 15 in. fish and then 6 or 8, 8 or 9 inchers , I see it a lot on the Miss. river .

I manage two 4-5 acre lake for our HOA in a large subdivision subdivision in northern Alabama. We encourage our residents(only and guests) to take bass under 14 inches(to eat) and release larger. We have maintained a great fishery for 16 years. Great chance of catching large bass up to six pounds any day all year. JR.

Pondering about eating fish, including bass? Think about this:

Native Americans (Indian folks) as well as billions of people around the globe have been eating fishes, including bass where they can be found, for millions of years before the USA even became a country here. They are just fine! Of course, man-made pollutions are causing red-flag alarms reminding us to pay attention to all that we eat, including vegetables, fishes, etc... depending the local environments where you happen to be. In general, I think fish is still a good natural source of food, definitely better than thousands of processed foods that can be found in local grocery stores nowadays. Right?

I keep bass that are just over the limit. I release all bass that are 2 lbs and over because of the taste and breeding value.

I think bass for the sport if I take the fish only when it's hurt and won't survive I thrown back so somebody else can have the enjoyment of catching them

Having been brought up on catching and eating flounder, fluke, seabass, blackfish., bluefish I haven't acquired the taste for bass. I found that bamed or broiled bass is rather bland and needs a good batter coating. Breaded or batter coated just not my thing.

You are right, sometimes the sauce makes the fish.

Been fishing for better part of 48 years and fished with buddies that did the bass tournament thing. They treated the bass we caught like a sacred cow and released everything they caught. I can see their point. I on the other hand am more of a pleasure fisherman and like to have a good fish dinner now and then as do my family (especially the way I cook em up) whether it’s grilled, deep fried in a batter, or ceviche. So if the lake, reservoir, river, impoundment, or creek I’m fishing has a healthy population of fish then I have no problem taking a few home for eating. My tournament fishing buddies would occasionally frown on it but respected me enough that they would sometimes help me filet them. Just make sure you only take what you will use and release the rest for another day. And always introduce a non-fisher person or a kid to awesome sport of fishing! Tight lines to all!

I say go for it. That's one of the reasons I fish is for the food. LMB is a very tasty fish in my opinion.
