I have a new, just broke in, Tohatsu on the back of my boat, quiet, less fuel consumption, and scoots my boat at 43mph but usually run it at about 30mph. Its a 4stroke, 40hp, and got rid of the Yamaha, that was on the boat when I bought it. There is a Tohatsu group page on Face Book, if you care to look/join. When you look up the facts, and the VS. you will own one of these motors. FF welcome to the stage!
Have a 6hp Tohatsu, bought "used" (8+hrs !) for half the retail price new, off Craigslist.
Love it on my 12' Livingston. Always starts, easy maintenance.
Congrats on your choice, Froggy, I think you chose well.
Now then.... what will you do with that beautiful oldie ?
Oh I am keeping that for a while. Kind of a cool subject of conversation given how well it still runs for 67 years. Speaks well to good olâ âmerican ingenuity and quality that we so badly lack these days because we donât manufacture a lot of what we use to.

2 cycle just have. Check valve and need decent compression . The rest is simply ignition and fuel. Thatâs why they run so long. Yes they pollute more but I have 50+ year old 4 cycles too but I rather doubt the majority of todayâs 4 cycles will be running in 50 years from now. There is much more needed for 4 cycles to function.

Check and see if there is a Marine Museum close by. That would be a great addition .
Well, the new motor is on and holy crap that was heavy, at least compared to the other. I bolted it to the transom and I am getting my transom saver tomorrow because damn taking that on and off every time I go fishing. This is about all that boat is going to handle I am sure. I topped out at 11 mph with the little Johnson which is damn good but this I doubt will take little effort to double that speed. Wonât be going top end much thoughâŚ.well maybe after it is broken in.
had a 35 hp. mercury purchased brand new motor went out after a two years warranty .expired went back to dealer sent blown up parts back to mercury plant no negligence on my part was 2 cycle had oil in gas was a flaw internal metal rod mercury fixed the whole engine didn't cost me one penny .Booo Yaaa !
No doubt that I would likely have been happy with a Merc, but didnât care for the last minute misunderstanding about the warranty. Plus the whole â here you go, and good luckâ thing really just, well, meh!!! I should get and expect more for my money.

Welcome, Froggy! Just a tip, when you respond to a post hit quote reply so we know who you are responding to. đ
Good choice Froggy, I have one on my Klamath for trolling, great motor, the main is a Tohatsu 50, runs like a top and will troll all day on a few gallons of gas!

Just took her out for a out an hour so before sunset to try out. Got some adjustments to do for sure. Almost feel like it is almost too big for the boat. Got her up to 15 mph and that was at or just below half throttle. Have to play around with the trim though because she was set at position 4 which was pushing the stern down and bow up not coming on to plane very well or at all. May have to do a whale tale as well but will see. Love her though, so damn quiet can barely hear her at idle. Take some getting use to for sure.
Froggy you may have to move weight forward or add weight forward also. Just a thoughtđđ

I do sit in the middle seat and put a tiller extension which helped even with my 5.5 hp Johnson. Unfortunately, I alone weigh 220lbs so when I am at the back with a motor that weighs 94lbs plus 24lbs for 3 gallons of gas, the poor boat is maybe about 6-8â from top of transom to surface of water. Good thing she doesnât leak a drop or I would really be in trouble.
