Tony, that looks great! Is it just for transport or will it also serve as your rod holders while surf fishing? If for fishing I think I might angel them at 45 degrees or so. Just so they are not straight up and down. But, will certainly work either way. Nice job! Cool looking truck too! What kind is it?

Canopy leg sandbags. Durable and have handles and Velcro straps.

I suggest adding an eye bolt to each outside tube and running a rope through it with a small caribiner to a tie down in the bed corners (if possible) or adding 20# of sand to the base. Bungee cords can be used as well.

It's a Hyundai Santa Cruz - new model this year. AWD so I can do the beach. I usually use sand spikes because I don't want to be getting up and down in the truck all the time. I may have to angle it anyway because we have one low overpass on the highway out to the beach. With a 12' rod I may not make it under. I don't have any 12' footers but a friend does, so we'll see.

Tony just an idea but ya might attach a little piece of braided nylon string to the rod holder to put over the reel handle just in case the pole would want to bounce out 🤔

I'm waiting for some inspiration to hit me.....lol

Inspiration: Fill the base full of sand or wheel leads, put a coupling on the aft arms so that you can slide long extension arms in to provide stability yet remove them to use the bed.

I made a rocket launcher rod holder for a friend a few years ago and it was a six rod and I think it cost me about $25. I've got close to $50 into this 5 rod, but I did have to buy some new glue and a can of spray paint. Anyway, this is the new beach bum buggy, slowly getting ready to go to work. The rack failed the 70 MPH test and tipped over but I've only got it secured with bungy cords. I'm reluctant to drill into the truck bed and put in metal clamps, but I might have to. I ordered Weathertech floor mats from Amazon but they didn't fit - so I have a new set ordered from Smartliner. Other Santa Cruz owners have said they fit great.

You ever hear of the term KISS?

Keeping it as simple and sturdy as it could get, give your cross bar with the holder pipes about an eight or ten inch lift...which would allow you to use a ratcheting strap across to the lower bed hooks which would give the downward tension needed to make it rock solid. Your tubes would simply be elevated a few inches

Rare earth magnets, no need for bungee cords. May not be easy to remove though.
