Three acre private pond in Maryland. Certainly not over fished as I’ve only seen just one or two other fishermen there at a time in fact most of the time I’m the only one there.

During the hottest days of the summer I’d catch 5-6 largemouth in four hours. The bluegill were everywhere and children could catch as many as they wanted.

Fast forward to September 15. In eight visits to the pond I haven’t had a nibble. No bluegill either. No evidence of a fish kill. Any guesses on what’s causing this?
Can anyone offer a suggestion why this has happene... (show quote)

Got any fish eating birds around? Eagles, hawks, Osprey? Osprey will clean up a big blue gill pond in about a week.

I’ve never heard of this bird until I looked it up. I kind of doubt it since we are 150 miles from the ocean and I’ve never seen behavior as described.

We had Cormorants in Wyoming. That’s 1500 miles from the nearest ocean.

As it is a private pond, have you spoken to the owner? Also, see if you an get a camera down in the water to see

It’s more like a conservation club pond. Not open to the public only members. I doubt if they’d spend the money for such a study. Today I was told that there will be stocking of 200 trout so we will see what happens to them.

There is a thing called “ turn over “ that happens in a pond. Basically something happens to the oxygen and the pond plants, and algae ( sp ? ) and fish can die. And if I recall right, the bottom cooler temperatures can and will hold dead fish on the bottom until cooler surface temperature helps the pond / water equalize. Please don’t take this as absolute fact though. Just an older guy thinking he remembers stuff....

Thanks that’s the most reasonable thing I’ve heard. On the other hand this happened overnight and not a gradual slack off. I fished there for two hours today with nary a tug.

Oh didn’t know it happened overnight. That’s probably not a predator problem then. It would take a heck of a lot of fish eating birds to clean a complete pond out over night. Not sure what caused that then. Maybe somebody shocked the water and took em all when nobody was looking🤷‍♂️
