Can anyone offer a suggestion why this has happened?

Three acre private pond in Maryland. Certainly not over fished as I’ve only seen just one or two other fishermen there at a time in fact most of the time I’m the only one there.

During the hottest days of the summer I’d catch 5-6 largemouth in four hours. The bluegill were everywhere and children could catch as many as they wanted.

Fast forward to September 15. In eight visits to the pond I haven’t had a nibble. No bluegill either. No evidence of a fish kill. Any guesses on what’s causing this?

Any otters in the area? They will eat 6 fish a day and kill a bunch just for shi1s and giggles. That would be my guess.

Any farm land or golf course around that it may have been poisoned? Low oxy and or poison should have showed a fish kill i would think.

How about minnow action? Any to speak of?

I’ve seen a few minnows in the past and see blue gill all the time. As far as a fish kill wouldn’t there be floating dead fish? There is none of that.

Yea, either way poison or lack of oxy should be some floaters. Have you tried Fish and Wildlife folks?

Yes I call DNR and the fellow I talked to chalked it up to the changing season and bad luck.

Cormorants might be the culprits. Depending on the fish population, they could clean out a modest sized pond in a matter of a few days. It happens around where I live all the time on smallish backwoods lakes. They seem to have "radar" for finding secret bluegill ponds, etc.

Have you ever noticed any around...or in your general region?

I’ve never heard of this bird until I looked it up. I kind of doubt it since we are 150 miles from the ocean and I’ve never seen behavior as described.

Change of seasons seems like a stretch, but the bad luck 8 times in a row. Definitely something fishy or not. Check it out now and then and see if anyone else has caught any.

I know what you mean. I’ve talked to two guys who haven’t caught a fish since about the same time yet in a farm pond near my house I get strikes. Figure it out.

Cormorants could very well be the problem, They are getting bad here in Idaho along the Snake River. They are not just an Ocean or costal bird. We really need to think about controlling them somehow. A good shotgun!
