Have you tried Gabapentin? I use a tens machine or an ENSO when I’m doing work or when my back acts up. I might be going to get surgery if the next epidural shot doesn’t work it will be the second one

Hey I F,
I’m not sure I can help you, but it sounds like your medical history with your back and knee is almost identical to mine. I am 67 and had to retire four years ago from the remodeling business, due to back and knee surgeries. In 2002 I had surgery on my left knee, to repair a torn meniscus and remove some arthritis.
I had a back fusion (L 3-4) in 2006, after several years of spinal epidurals with steroids to manage the pain. I started taking Hydrocodone daily to help with the pain so I could keep working.
This DOES NOT help the source of the pain, but just blocks your brain from feeling it. So, like Greg said, it is not a long term solution.
Anyway, by 2011 I had to have my left knee replaced. The surgeon put it in “extra tight” because I told him I would be working for at least 10 more years, and he said he didn’t want it to wear out before I retired.
Well, it hurt ALL the time and last November had to be replaced again. By now my right knee was also past due and I had it replaced in March.

I’ve told you all this just to get to this: I believe all the knee (and back) problems have had a lot to do with additional back pain, plus the pain from sciatica. That’s the tingling pain you get down the outside of your leg. For those who may not know, this is caused by the sciatic nerve in the back, getting pinched as a result of inflammation around the spine.
One thing that can cause that is walking “goofy” ( not normal) because you’re trying to favor a leg or back to lessen the pain.

Here’s the good news!

During the course of my PT for my knee replacements with Brandi (some may remember the pic I posted; more than just a pretty face), I asked her if there was anything she could do to relieve the pain of sciatica. She said “sure!”. “A very simple exercise you can do anywhere.”
She had me do it right then, and within 3 minutes the pain was nearly gone! I’m going to try to describe it here; hopefully it will work for you as well as it has for me.

Stand next to a wall with your shoulder about 8-10” from wall and the leg with the sciatic pain farthest from the wall. Raise your forearm to about shoulder height, place it against wall in horizontal position, and lean your hips into wall. (see pic) Hold for 30 seconds. Return to straight standing position. Do 5-10 reps several times a day.
Be amazed!! Works for me....If anyone has any questions, PM me.
Hey I F, br I’m not sure I can help you, but it so... (show quote)

Better be careful nowadays Randy putting a hug on the therapist. Could lead to a problem later.

Good exercise idea btw.

Thanks, I'll ask about it. Looks like a lot of possible side effects.

I had a client that had one. It did help him. It depends on your specific back issues as to whether it's for you or not. Some people, for various reasons, can't be inverted.

I tried one of those machines and couldn’t handle being inverted, made me feel like I was sea sick.

Stenosis of the spinal canal means that the changes in the vertebrae are narrowing the space that the spinal chord runs through. It’s actually bone narrowing the space so things like manipulation, injections etc aren’t going to cure it. My mom had it and at 86 YO she had a laminectomy, removal of the dorsal part of the vertebra, and it worked very well. She was golfing around 6 weeks later. She lived till 102.

I had pain in right hip. Shots worked for a while. Eventually had 5th vertebrae fused in '17. I would estimate I'm 95% better. Have Medicare & Blue Cross/Blue Shield. $100K paid by insurance. God is Good!

There IS hope for bad discs in your neck. They can be replaced! My Wife had 2 discs replaced, and now she has no neck trouble! She needed this because of a whiplash she'd gotten years before.
....I wish that they could do this in our lower backs!

Other thing to do for the back is get some "Hush Puppies". They absorb the shock of your heel hitting the ground, so it doesn't go up your legs to your back. Slow walks and when it starts to hurt, Stop and sit down. Then walk home. The act of walking makes the back muscles go up and down helping the back straighten. Not Magic, just better day by Day. Watch the heels and soles for wear. When the heels start to wear round on the side or rear, you need to buy new ones. The Creep heels and Soles absorb the shock of hitting the ground really good.

Got my knee replaced last year. It is what was hurting the most, so I started there. I was hoping that was the source of my back pain. I was wrong. It got to the point that I would avoid any walking, even a block or 2. Finally saw a specialist, and this was the diagnosis. I had lower back fusion done in 1984, and was told at the time that I may eventually have trouble above it. Doc wants an MRI before he does any treatment, but insurance won't pay for that until I get 6 weeks of physical therapy. Due to the average age on the stage (I'm probably about average or above, I'll be 65 in November) I thought maybe someone has had treatments or procedures that worked/ didn't work. I'm kind of bummed, hoping for a cortisone shot to get me through the harvest season but that would delay surgery if that is indicated by the MRI. I've been pretty depressed about my lack of mobility and thought I would reach out to the vast wealth of knowledge here.

Hey If, I had surgery for a ruptured disc (L4-L5) back in 2011, where they went in and cleaned out the fragments and therapy after that gave me some good exercises to stay loosened up and strengthen my core. I reinjured my back In 2015 and the MRI showed spinal stenosis on L3-L4 and L4-L5 which means that those discs are being compressed together which also leads to siatic nerve pinching where the nerve come on out of the spine and go into your legs thus causing pain and numbness clear into your feet. I was given 5 different exercises while lying on my back to stretch open those discs. It takes me about 25 minutes each morning to do the routine but it definitely helps me throughout the day. My chiro has a new machine for spinal decompression that a lot of people are using for relief of spinal stenosis also. You may want to look into that treatment also. Good luck and you have my prayers as I know what you are dealing with first hand, and it isn't fun. I turn 65 in November also. Hope you can get some permanent relief by the happy day.

Just had L5/S1 surgery on 5-10-21. Major surgery. Normal for Ins to want the pt. I’m still in pain but getting better with pt.
They actually went in the front 1st and put a spacer in my spine. Then in my back to install the hardware. Looks like a preying mantis. Not a walk in the park. I’m 72 and have a suspect hip too. But there really isn’t a choice.

Wow. looks like you left a toddler alone with a hammer and keg of nails. Mine was done before they used rods. The kid of an orthopedic Dr. I had didn't even see the fusion until I told him about it. 😳

I had severe lower back and leg pain for many years. (Both legs) I tried everything including chiropractic, acupuncture, decompression and injections. I finally found a doctor that realized that I had bulging disc on L4/L5 and L5/S1 on both sides of each. That explained why both legs hurt. I had surgery in 2014. They did a discectomy. It seemed to work but I ended up with a staph infection that got into the spine. It was so bad that I could no longer walk. Had surgery again to clean out the infection. Had a pick line put in and was on it 3 months then oral antibiotics 3 more months. Got hooked on pain killers. I cannot stress enough how hard it was to get off of them. Had to do physical therapy in a pool. Almost lost my job. Only was allowed 1080 hours of sick leave and I used it. Went back to work even though I wasn’t ready. The doctor said that I would need fusion but I didn’t do it. It took about 6 months before I got back to normal. The company later doubled my work load and I couldn’t do it so I retired at 57. That was 2 and a half years ago. I am good now as long as I don’t lift anything too heavy. If you go to the website “losethebackpain.com” there is a lot of good information. I bought a device from them to stretch my back that is not an inversion table. I put a demonstration for you to see. Good luck.
