I was told by a friend's mother I would never make it through Marine Corps Boot Camp, I made it plus after four years I got an honorable discharge. My friend at the time who joined with me did make it through Boot Camp but ended up with bad paper and the last I heard was in prison. That was 56 years ago and have been told many times over I could not do this or that but I have successfully done a lot of things the naysayers said I could not.

I was always a pain to managers and supervisors in my working life and I guess maybe you could say life in general. I used to teach auto mechanics at city College of San Francisco and I had a department chair who said he had a PhD in education tell me not to teach in the lab any more but only in the classroom and no more hands-on just theory. For me that was the last straw I decided to retire and go back to life at the horse ranch. Well funny thing is I had some riders out one day and coming down the mountain trail was a bicyclist going as fast as he could. I asked him to slow down and of course he didn't pay any attention to me and after coming to a sliding stop and scaring my horses and riders have to death he looked at me with a big smile. well it turned out to be my old department chair who said I needed to do things his way. I can never tell you the pleasure I had leaning out of my saddle telling him I am the PhD out here and if I ever find you riding like that around my horses again I will show you how efficient the horses are at stomping on a bicycle and giving the rider a kick in the south end. That was a few years back and I have never seen him again.

"What comes around, goes around" may have applied for you in this case.

Back in the day, I was running heavy equipment. The fellow running the same type of machine right next to me went to college for 4 years and had a degree. Only difference was that he was 40,000 in debt. If you set your mind to something, you can do it. Attitude is half the solution

I try not to live in the past too often but occasionally I think it's okay to review our lives. Hopefully, we've learned from the past. About ourselves and others.

Have you ever been underestimated by family, friends, teachers and even strangers? There's always plenty of people that will tell you what you can do and can't do and why. After a while, if you hear enough from people about what you can't do -- you start to believe it. Especially when we are young.

Most of my life, I've been underestimated or sold short by people. Watch the movie "Rudy", and you will understand. Btw, it isn't really a sports movie. Notre Dame football is just the back drop.

I was told in high school that I couldn't go to college. It wasn't possible for me. I have a degree in Journalism, a 3.5 gpa when I went and spent 30 years in the newspaper business.
Paid my way through college.
No student loans. The examples continue. After my breakdown, no one will hire you they said, you won't earn much if hired. You won't own a house or car again. You won't get better,
people close to me said. I have a home, new car, a job in a completely different field and a confidence that comes with knowing they all underestimated me and what I could do.

Ever feel underestimated? Unsure? Lacking in confidence? I did. Don't listen to them. Rudy didn't. You shouldn't either.

Rudy may be the most inspirational movie ever filmed. Every child should be exposed to it at some point, I think at around 12 years old would be ideal. Wouldn't do adults any harm either. Thanx for reminding me about it.

I had some really good teachers in school but they were far and few in between, a lot of them just put us down as being stupid. Had one teacher tell us that we were just going to be ditch diggers when we got out of school.
Don’t pay any attention to them you can do just about anything you want to do.

Why would someone with that perspective and bad attitude choose teaching as a career ? Just doesn't make any sense ........
