I really do think that is a Murder Hornet. We have them here in Washington state. Yo need to call and let someone know what you've got there. No messing around. Bad news for all of us. Glad you killed it though.

I sprayed a couple the other day with wasp spray that usually kills on contact. These guys just shook it off and flew away.

I think it is a Murder Hornet. You should notify the State Agriculture Department. In Washington they used a micro tracking device to locate the hive. I think they use fruit or something to bait them and the tracking device gets stuck to them. The device indicates where their hives are located so they can be removed and studied / eradicated.

They are very detrimental to Honeybees. Please try to notify State Authorities they are very bad and are an invasive species of insect. Here in the PNW the Authorities are trying to eradicate them because of the dangers and how detrimental they are.

The stripes on the body perfectly match "C"

Underground nests? I'll have to keep an eye open for that, don't want these big suckers coming out while I'm mowing the grass.

Cicada killers are solitary wasps and don’t make hives. They burrow and dig out sandy dirt in your lawn or under bushes (looks like a big ant hill with a quarter-sized hole). I’ve mowed the lawn regularly over several of these holes with no problems, but never feel comfortable about it. The burrows can have a few chambers where the female drags in a stung cicada lays her eggs but there’s only one adult wasp per hole. I see the males, who don’t have stingers, perched somewhere aggressively running off other males but they don’t dive bomb me when the mower is out.
I have two younger kids who don’t like them, so I get rid of them every year by spraying dust in the holes. If you do that at night or early AM when they’re in the hole it kills the adult and larvae, but others come by and just find another spot to dig. That’s been the cycle every year. They like my lawn because the dirt is sandy and it gets lots of sunlight.
Hope that helps.

It is a cicada killer. They don't sting but will do a number on those cicadas.

Its a cicada killer, only the female have stingers

Yeah, that was my guess too. They run about 2 inches long. I looked them up and the murder wasp has a large orange head where the cicada killer has yellow and brown on the head. That would make this one a murder wasp.

Looks like the murder hornet they are having in Washington state. Google it and it looks like the one you hit. They are brutal 1/4 inch stinger that can sting thru a normal bee suit. They've shown it on our TVs in the San Diego area for quite awhile now.

Could be murder hornet. Had a couple here last year, the wasp spray did nothing, soaked it many times. Finally knocked it out of air with towel and stepped on it. BIG nasty. 1 1/2 inches

Does anyone really know what it is Now I'm curious the verdict seems to keep going back and forth from murder to killer

I thought we locked it in at the cicada killer when a "photo resource" for comparison to the one from ivey indicated that black/yellow banding pattern on the thorax...and then went on to say that the head could be brownish to orangish? It looked like a match in my eyes....in favor of the cicada killer. Gosh...that almost sounds like a great title for an insect horror movie!

It's the Cacada killer the black lines on it's rear end has the defined breaks of dips the Muder has a solid line. The Cacada has the yellow face and brownish back of the head and back and translucent orange wings. I'm certain that's what it is from pics. on the internet. Either way I don't like them around the house and will strive to eradicate them.
