Hey danger, I was fluke fishing with squid. 30lb braid. Did manage to catch a couple keeper fluke that day. Cownose was 3ft across, tail was at least 5ft long. I held on to the spool and managed to land it.
Had a big spinner shark do that to me beauty was I got three jumps from him he spooled me as fast as I could think.
Ive been spooled couple times crappie fishing. Figure a big ol cat hets a trophy jig instead of the other way round. 4lb test in the shallows doesnt always work.

Wow..nice…i had 20 lb braid on this reel….landed the 2 1/2 ft skate….didnt seem like the line was a problem…it didnt snap. He just kept running even with me trying to crank the handle…
Lot of people eat part of those cow nosed rays. Have you ever?

Got spooled! For the 1st time ever….from the surf no less.
Something big hit my bait and ran and my reel just screamed as my line came off….no cranking of the handle was stopping this thing…
Before i could think about getting to my knife and cutting the line….the spool was empty…
He ran straight down the shoreline…and broke the surface a couple times….i couldn’t see it but other guys on the beach said it was the biggest Skate they ever saw…4 feet across
Somewhere in the Delaware Bay is a giant Skate with 200 yards of braid hanging from its mouth….hahaha

Most likely a Cow nose ray. There is lots of them around this month and the run 30-40 pounds . Did it feel like you hooked up with a bus?

I have a couple heavy rods and reels I bought to use from the boat in deep water. But from the beach i could have 2 whiting hooked up and never feel a thing! Lol
My go to rod for heavier surf fishing is a Lamiglas GSB 132 1 blank that I built on conventional. The backup is the same blank tied as a spinner. I use it for stripers and blues in the surf. Landed an estimated 100 # butterfly ray that measured 62 inches across in about 20 minutes. I usually use a lighter rod for kingfish but I can feel them on that rod.

I dont know fly…that spool was spinning pretty fast. Would rather buy more braid than lose two fingers. This nose aint gonna pick itself.
That's why you grab the spool not the line, just like the brakes on a car squeeze down slow, on the spool,, don't grab the line
I recently caught a decent sized ray outside of Dana Point by the Barber Poles, and with 50 lb main line and a 60 lb leader, I was able to get it to my Kayak finally after a half hour of tugging, giving, and more tugging. It wanted to hug the bottom (100' of water there).
Got it to the kayak and it was about 36" to 40" across. Definitely more than I wanted to bring in my kayak, but I wanted to get my lure back, so I worked it until I could get a hand gaff in its wing, which sent it into another crazy state, but I was able to get my lure, and let it go back to the bottom.
Great adventure, but I did not want a 36"+ ray with its stinger in the kayak with me at that point, so I guess we both won the day. I'm sure it is surviving the hole I put in its wing with my hand gaff.
And, we both lived to fish another day.....

WOW...that is a great story. As a fellow kayaker, I can get a sense of your dilemma, although I think I would not have been brave enough to tinker with that ray up next to the kayak! You deserve a "gold star" on that one!
Actually, the ray deserves the gold star! But thanks!

I'm still trying to visualize my friend landing and releasing a 7 foot thresher shark from a yak a couple miles offshore. Yes he is that crazy and has arms the size of my legs.

Wow…i love the line “ but i wanted to get my lure back.” Hahaha..i am visualizing A28 diving down 100 ft with a filet knife in his teeth like rambo…..” Gimmie my lure you SOB!”…..hahaha.
Yeah, kinda crazy with the boats outboards anyway, friend gave me a killer deal on a boat in the spring. I started to look into putting a shiny new motor on it…. You can’t get one! They’ll take your money and put your name on a list! Same thing with propane forklifts matter of fact…. Let’s get back on track, Americans!!! We need new boats and forklifts!
