Not our Bass Pro Shop here in San Jose, Ca. They carry hardly nothing for our local fishing, but are heavily stocked up for the bass fishermen. Our fishing area is predominantly ocean fishing, and quite a few lakes for trout. You go in to buy something for salt water fishing and forget it, either they're out of it or don't stock it. This store has been here for about 5 years and has always been this way.

Send a letter or email to their
Corporate Office and let them
know that the local store isn't
'up to snuff' (and WHY) ! They
seem to value customer input
more than many other stores,
and don't like receiving negative
input - maybe their 'Office' just
needs a wake-up call ?

The BPS here in Mesa carries a fair amount of saltwater gear, and we're
nearly six hours from the coast
(San Diego) !

Before driving cross country. I would go online to get a sense product and prices. Academy is about 15 min from where I live BPS is about 45 min away. I think they all buy from a consolidation of Chinese Co. Sometimes I buy from Amazon, online at least you can see reviews and see what people write about the product instead of being by yourself in a store aisle trying to figure it out yourself. Go on YouTube ther are a couple of guys who some pretty good reviews on stuff they've used.
Happy Fishing

Had a bad experience with the manager at Dickโ€™s, never went back.
Big 5 here has decent basic fishing items.
They carry hunting items also along with hand guns. Clothes, shoes etc. They send coupons in the mail for discounts.
When Sports Authority stores went out of business here, I got a good deal on a long surf rod.
We have Turnerโ€™s hunting and fishing stores here that are good, donโ€™t know if they are a national store or just local to the San Diego area.
Back in the early 80s Big 5 would fill your reels for a penny a yard and I never had the line break on a fish.
There is a store call Squidco here that mostly caters to the sports fishing fleet but they have items that you canโ€™t find anywhere else like lobster nets. They do rod and reel repair also.

That's nearly as bad (for me) as ordering anything on-line ! Feels like I'm buying 'a pig in a poke' ! Much rather SEE and HANDLE item in
person before I decide to buy or not, and it's a good excuse to get out of the house for a few hours !

I DO often use the phone to locate items/services to cut down on
wasted trips, but dealing with some
of the idiots on the phone is way
too aggravating for my taste, even when/if they finally pick it up, then they put you on interminable 'hold' while (supposedly) looking it up or looking for the item ! As we well
know, it is exccedingly difficult
to find/get good help these days !
That's nearly as bad (for me) as ordering anything... (show quote)

Or any help BigA then they hire someone for a department they don't know anything about

If you can think ahead, It is hard to beat the internet. Don't get ripped off by shipping costs though and check delivery time. Some sales can also be a deal if it is what you want. Don't get caught up in the trend of buying just because the price is good.

I am lucky enough to live about 25-30 minutes away from all three of these. Unfortunately all in different directions. Until a few months ago I hadn't fished sense I was a small child. I have decided I need to upgrade my gear from the wallmart stuff I bought. Is their a reason I should choose one of the above stores over the other two? I realize this is pretty lazy to ask, but checking out all three of them would probably take the better part of a day. Does it matter? Does one carry better brands and/or prices?

Thank you to any and all answers!

Would not purchase anything from Dickโ€™s.

Cableโ€™s, sportsmen and bass pro are all owned by the same company now.

I think bass pro tends to lean more towards the fishing sideโ€ฆlarger variety of manufacturers and lure designs available in their store.

2cents? Iโ€™ll put mine in. Shop small, the biggies have their place but we have to support small businesses. Find a local tackle shop. Buy the outfit from one. It could be your neighbor.

Personally, I wouldn't buy anything from Dick's even if it was half the price of the other places. I do not care for them. I won't list my reasons for fear of being sent to the attic. Just my 2 cents worth.

Me too. Will not shop Dick's.

I have learned that Delta Shores Dick Sporting Goods dont stock major items needed for Salmon and American Shad fishing. Items that BPS and Sportman do.
