Baitcaster doesn't cast very far

Short casts seem like a combination of rod, reel, and line. A medium heavy 7' rod with 20 lb mono test is not going to cast a 3/16 oz lure well regardless of how good a caster you are. Several options: (1)lighter action rod and 20 lb braid might help; (2) heavier weight lures consider jigs and crankbaits; (3) go to spinning with lighter braid and reserve the bait caster for fishing rough cover and flipping. Having both rods with you gives you a lot more options for where and how you fish. Tom L.

Yea on that set up MH rod and 20 pound mono, there’s not much you can do with light weight presentations.
My finesse bait cast rig is Shimano Aldebaran and a 7-0 Loomis Glx 852 (2 power) 20 pound braid

This set up is perfect for light lures but expensive as heck

what does 2 power mean? I've never seen that before.

The reason they put recommendations for lure weight on a rod, is because that's what weight is needed to load up the rod properly during a cast. If you want to throw light baits use a rod designed for them. It's simple physics.
Use a Medium or Medium Light rod and your troubles will be over.

Or pay the freight and get yourself an ultralight. Hard to find, but they're becoming more common. I bought one, as I said earlier, and it's the real McCoy. Seems the Japanese figured out the finesse bass fishing thing way before us Yanks. But you'll pay for it.

Anybody else out there know about that 2 power thing? That Ben was talkin about?

Unless you are going for 10 lb. plus bass, I would drop down to 10 to 14 lb. line like Triline mono which has good casting characteristics. I have several Shimano Curado's (25 years old) and I can cast 50 to 75 feet with 3/16 oz. T-rig easily. Once you get familiar with your rig, then you can try some Power Pro braid. Good advice to start with a heavier wt.

I believe he said he was casting 20 yards with what he's using.

Spirit, I believe it's just a particular series of their rods, the #s at the bottom of the grip tells the specific lure weights....here's mine

OK. I think you're right. One of the Loomis G2 series rods. Makes sense now. I thought maybe you were onto something I know nothing about. I had been looking hard for a ultralight power, fast action casting rod. I finally found one, but not made in America.

Ben mentioned the GLX, that's a high end rod that's super sensitive. Has something to do with the graphite and the way it's built. I suppose that rod would be used when the bite is very subtle. I hate that kind of fishing, I like fish that slam my lure....ha

Try Lamiglas. Might have what you’re looking for. Made in Washington state. Very nice rods
