So,,, NOT the M1 Garrand, I'd initially made mention of, but, an M1917. (I'm guessing that my neighbor in Cleveland, 40-ish years ago, had made mention of "the Garrand"; and that somehow got tangled up in my mind.)

Yes I'm sure it was a 30.06 now.
I just took possession of a Springfield M1 Garand. I haven't shot it yet. I have about 300 rounds of military ball ammo that is steel core that is not allowed at my local range because of fire danger. So I need to find and purchase 30.06 suitable for a M1 Garand.

Yeah best fishing ever you don't want to shoot just any regular Old 30.06 thru a M1 grand they burn too hot an to much pressure can Bend or break the operating rod

I had a Remington model 700, in the early 1970's and it seems as though the price of a single round, was right ~@ 50¢ ... The LAST time I bought .30-06 ammo, they ran right about $1 per "cap"... This would've been in the mid-1990's, I'm thinking. ... However ya slice it, not much of an option for ME; as a "target practice" weapon... Yes, I would be double sure to burn up $50 or $100 worth of ammo, "to familiarize myself" with it... Then, I'm fairly certain it would be "tucked away" somewhere handy but SECURE, for when it comes time to make use of it, for it's "intended purpose". ... In the Name of LOVE: ¡¡¡USE EARPLUGS!!!

I did, 40 + 50 years ago... I don't know if I'd fiddle with it or not, at THIS point. I'm thinking that, as long as it appears to be in good shape (0% corrosion &/or "dings" of any sort)... I'd probably "roll with it". ... I'm NOT a "qualified expert".

Yes you can I would say as long as the ammo was stored in a cool dry place and taken care of 👍

Although I DO have "a vague memory" of my father referring to it as "the Enfield"; perhaps 20 or so years after it was stolen.

Yes Kermit you can safely shoot surplus military ammunition in a modern 30.06 but remember that it is steel core and could be hard on the rifling in the barrow over time.

Someone told me that it depends on how late the rifle was made. Mine was made in December of 1957, this is the last year Springfield made the M1. But I'm not taking any chances.

Yes, Sir; it was most certainly bolt action and loaded from the top... No detachable magazine on THAT weapon. I used to have the ammo belt that he'd worn, in the couple if pictures that were taken of him, in 1917. (And, I'm guessing, stayed with him, until passing on to "his reward"; in 1957 or early 1958)... Seeing as how that particular ,30-06 was "a top loader" (it had a FIXED, 5-round magazine, stacked up under the breach), his ammo belt also contained some "stripper clips" which appeared to be made of brass or bronze and each held 5 rounds of .30-06. ... My model 700 (Remington) ALSO loaded 5 rounds, in the exact same fashion. I couldn't seem to "get the hang of" using the "stripper clips". (Perhaps because I didn't have a Drill Sargent screaming in my ear.)
I'm guessing that since each of the several pouches of that ammo belt probably had it's own stripper clip, there must've been 8 or 10 of them, in 1917... I only had 1 survivor, about 30 or so years ago... I don't know where things end up.
