I'm fairly new at (seriously) fishing and try to pay attention. I'm wondering just how often the "normal" angler catches fish. Right now I'm catching fish 60% of my trips. That is any fish, most are 12", not many at all are over 14-15". I've gone 30 times since January 1st and mostly fish for bass. I do somehow manage to land a catfish occasionally (and unintentionally), usually on a crank bait. I'm interested in hearing how everybody else is doing. Obviously, this is mostly to see how I'm doing myself. A friend told me that bass fishermen are always lying when you ask them if they are catching fish. If they are catching fish, they tell you they aren't, because they don't want you asking where and how. If they aren't catching fish, they tell you they are, because they don't want you thinking they don't catch fish. I don't know about all that. What are your catch rates?

I've been saying more prayers than catching fish but the weather hasn't been cooperative either

I have never been skunked fishing the Snake River . I live next to Hells canyon Oregon and fish the Snake more than two hundred day a year. Twenty bass is a slow day here. On my best day I have caught and released over Two Hundred smallies, this does not include the large mouth, crappie, trout, bluegill. multiple species of cat fish or carp. We also have a spring and fall run of salmons and steelhead. But if you’re interested in larger fish there are two species of sturgeon. This is a fisherman’s paradise. Check out Hells Canyon Oregon or Halfway Oregon for lodging. For hunters there are elk, two species of deer, bear, cougar, prong horn antelope, mountain goats , big horn sheep and many different species of birds to include pheasant, chuckars, grouse etc. We have got it all!

There is no way to compare normal in number or size when fishing different locations, different times and different fish. Fishing from a boat or land is also like comparing apples and oranges.

couldn't agree more spring trout every time out, steelhead far and few between, chinook not so much, Pink every time out. Really depends on time of year, and target fish sometimes I can catch a fish in a bucket of water others I can't even catch one at the Fred Myers store.

Whtoak, interesting thought you have there. This year I e been out 3 times for Bass. Twice for Smallmouth and once after Largemouth, and I’m 100% right now. Last year was a different story, probably went out 12 or more times after them and only caught a few about 3 times, so that would put me at or under 25%. I’m not too worried about it though, as I just love going and be outside or in the water fishing, so it’s All Good. And I’m setting at 0% for Crappie this year, and with our heat and Fires, it ain’t going to get any better I’m afraid.

All I can say is you will have good days and days you can't even catch water.!!
These are the day that you learn from and makes you a better fishermen or fishing lady.
You have got advise today from everyone here on the stage.
To me Bass fishing is like hunting except fishing for for Bass you are hunting under water throwing different kinds of baits to find and catch a Bass. What I'm try to say is Bass fishing whether on land or in a boat you are moving to find that Bass
Like hunting. That's why I love Bass fishing it is the challenge of out starting that big o Bass. Like what color worm 🪱 to use which style of crank bait to use etc ... I could go on for ever , but the main thing love and enjoy the sport on the water and repect.other Angler's.
Good luck and safe fishing 🎣 on the water.
If you ever have any??
About what to use text me
Or any one on the stage

Best time is prespawn late April - May for smallmouth. This past spring the best day fishing was over one hundred caught only two were under 1.5 pounds . The biggest was around Four pounds. The best part is that the Bass are only getting bigger.

Barometric Pressure, wind speed and direction, what lake I fished, time of day, time of year, where you fished, sunny or cloudy, your catch number, type fish, bait used I even include line size and type. I always include if I was off shore or fishing the bank, there's plenty more you can record but these will get you an idea of what you did on a certain day and maybe you can repeat it next trip or even next year, if there were water birds near, where I noticed bait on the depth finder, lots of the time I even recorded fish I lost after the hook set and why I thought I lost them. There's lots of stuff I don't record any more but after years of notes I remember a lot of the stuff I did and when and where but that's only because I took detailed notes before and remember a lot things now. When I was tournament fishing I recorded everything I could remember that night and took down a few notes while fishing

I'm 71 and remember the fist time I fell through a hole in the ice ice fishing with my dad and uncle because some A hole fisherman forgot to put branches over the hole to mark it my first fishing LESSON✌😳Oh and by the way my biggest smallie was just under 6lbs caught first week of June in Maine on a Zoom Watermellon red pearl fluke. when I was 60 caught many in the4 to 5lb range from the time I was 30 to 60

I like full moon for Nighttime surfcasting for stripers. Suspect strongest tides stir up bait at bottom and get the food chain in high gear. Also weaker bait fish make easier targets for larger fish that can negotiate stronger currents?
For fresh water I have good luck, also at night for L M Bass using topwaters . My favorite : black jointed Jitterbug.
Call water is a must for this to work, and clear sky w/o clouds definitely helps.
