I'm fairly new at (seriously) fishing and try to pay attention. I'm wondering just how often the "normal" angler catches fish. Right now I'm catching fish 60% of my trips. That is any fish, most are 12", not many at all are over 14-15". I've gone 30 times since January 1st and mostly fish for bass. I do somehow manage to land a catfish occasionally (and unintentionally), usually on a crank bait. I'm interested in hearing how everybody else is doing. Obviously, this is mostly to see how I'm doing myself. A friend told me that bass fishermen are always lying when you ask them if they are catching fish. If they are catching fish, they tell you they aren't, because they don't want you asking where and how. If they aren't catching fish, they tell you they are, because they don't want you thinking they don't catch fish. I don't know about all that. What are your catch rates?

Depends on so many variables that each day is different. That skunk shows up and there goes the catch rate.

1 small largemouth in 5 trips out. My daughter has 1 also and a sun fish in 6 trips out. The weather here has been off a lot this year.

So many variables.
Ive been skunked a few times, caught 1 or 2 on various occasions, had fair days and a few days of fantastic smackdown smallmouth fishing.
Sometimes I just cant seem to put anything together , then sometimes the pattern develops very well.
Thats just how it goes.

I am 3 for 4 fishing for cat. Baited with frog, snake , carp, bluegill and shad. Nearly 20# of cat and then fillet down to about 12# of freezer meat.

This is my 1st year fresh water fishing so I have a lot of learning to do. I have caught a few But also been skunked a few times. However, I go fishing because I love fishing, catching is a bonus. I love being by the water, with nature around me. I thoroughly enjoy the peace and quiet and the serenity fishing gives me. The very last thing I want to worry about is catch rate or any other metrics. Best of luck to you, hope you catch a lot.

This year before spawn I couldn't catch a cold. I don't fish spawn bass but after I've done pretty well nothing over 2.5 pounds . catfish blue and channel I've tore them up . going bream fishing tomorrow so hopefully that will be good. Don't keep track of how many or if ive been skunked or not. I just enjoy it . If I catch I catch if I don't it was still a good day. Tight lines

Everyone gets skunked from time to time. It's not about the skunk, it's did you learn anything getting skunked. Did you have the right bait, what were weather conditions, water temps, area of the lake, depth fished, lures used and when you catch fish what you caught them on learning something from your skunk outing might just put you on fish next time. If you didn't learn anything, chances are better that you'll get skunked next time out. I keep a small tablet I write almost everything down when I'm home so next time I run into the same conditions, time of year, wind speed, from what direction, barometric pressure anything relevant to that days fishing, all help make the next trip just a little more successful. Regretfully I lost 30 years worth of my fishing logs during my last move. Think the wife threw them out thinking they were junk.

I always learn from you buddy. On phone... on here and anywhere. Thanks Ivee I agree wholeheartedly though. Live and learn in this case fish and learn.

As far as catch rate sometimes mine is Rated G.... for good. Other times is PG... Pretty Good. Sometimes R for ridiculous. NR for Notoriously Ridiculous.

Ivey...... when I move to Eastern Connecticut, I started keeping track of conditions with a log just like yours to document what was working/not working in unfamiliar lakes, ponds, rivers. After a couple of years I found that was no longer needed, I had learned to pay close attention and remember important details. Learned lots about barometric changes during this time. I strongly recommend using a log to all, including experienced anglers. Does not need to interrupt fishing, I often completed my entries in my car immediately following fishing.

Barometric pressure does have a lot to do with how the fish are biting, or so is seems to me. If we have a steady or falling thru 30 the fish hit better 29.7 seems to be the best where I'm located. Wind from the east also slows the bite and that's from years of recording my catch. I've also found that three days before and 3 days after a full or new moon produces a better catch. The day of the full moon or new moon seems to fall off on the catch. I still go, but normally I catch less fish. I don't catch as many fish during a rain shower but do well before and after the rain. Of course I always jot down the spot where I catch them at what time of the year. Here in TN. April you can bet the shad will be spawning so it's an exultant time for topwater as is the late fall. My logs have helped win me a lot of tournament money in the past and I agree they are a very handy tool.

That is to broad of question to really answer with any authority. When specifically targeting sole or sanddab, I have never been skunked. When steelhead fishing, getting skunked is the norm. When smallmouth fishing I have been skunked numerous times, yet have always caught lots of smallmouth every chance I have had to fish at CJ Strike in Idaho. There is no way to compare normal in number or size when fishing different locations, different times and different fish. Fishing from a boat or land is also like comparing apples and oranges. It sounds like you are doing pretty well over all. You now have a base line of your own fishing to compare yourself to.

What are the most important things to log? Are there some standard metrics that matter?
